Spain is a catholic country so Easter will be celebrated everywhere. The week before Easter is very important and is called Semana Santa in Spain. If you are in Spain, this holy week is worth to visit.
Although it is celebrated in all cities, Sevilla and Malaga are the most impressive.
Semana Santa in Spain, the Holy week before Easter
During Semana Santa in Spain there are many brotherhoods who take part in processions that tell the story of Jesus. Participants in these processions, nazareno’s, wear robes with a pointed hood and mask so they won’t be recognized. Although it might look like it, and many people think so, it has nothing to do with the ‘Ku Klux Klan’.
Another thing you will see in the processions are ‘pasos’. Pasos are constructions with a statue on it that often represent the suffering of Jesus Christ. These pasos will be carried by the brotherhoods through the city.
If you want to see a procession, make sure you will be on time because there will be many people around who can be very emotional.
