Time goes by fast, but we don’t mind at all because that’s why it’s already time for the biggest street festival in Valencia: Las Fallas Program 2020. The streets of the city are decorated with impressive, from smaller to gigantic created statues which are called Fallas.

The complete Las Fallas Program 2020

Various activities will be arranged throughout the city and this all will be accompanied by lots of beautiful fireworks. Las Fallas 2020 starts on Sunday the 1st of March and ends on the 19th of March with ‘La Crema’. Since the biggest street festival of Europe will be for about three weeks, it is good to know what will take place where and at what time. To make sure you don’t miss anything of the impressive festivities we wrote down the official program of Las Fallas 2020 for you!

La Mascletà and many more activities during Las Fallas in Valencia

The Las Fallas 2020 will officially start on Sunday March the 1st. This is traditionally done with a “La Mascletà” at Plaza Ayuntamiento at 14:00. The impressive firework show could be described in simply one word “BANG!”. It will be the loudest firework show you’ve ever witnessed (almost) no doubt! Can’t make it on March 1st? No worries, “La Mascletà” will be repeated on a daily basis until the end of Las Fallas 2020! Do you prefer to see the firework shows at night? Or maybe the light shows in Ruzafa while enjoying a the local speciality Agua de Valencia?

The famous drink of Valencia: Agua de Valencia. This drink was introduced in 1959 by Constante Gil who worked in Valencia at the bar: Café Madrid. A group of Basque travellers challenged the bartender to make something new with cava. When the barman came up with this delicious treat, it eventually became a tradition to order Agua de Valencia for the Basque travellers. 11 years later in 1970 the drink became more and more known to others.

Make Agua de Valencia easy and quick

Most cocktails are quite hard to make because of the endless ingredients and the cutting work. With Agua de Valencia this is not the case! This cocktails only consist of 4 ingredients and no cutting work (maybe a slice of orange for decoration). Agua de Valencia consist of the follow ingredients:

Fresh orange juice

Cava

Gin

Vodka

To make the cocktail so delicious as possible, it is best to use fresh orange juice. It could also be nice to add sugar to the Agua de Valencia, but this is not necessarily important. If you are on a leash or not really a fan of sugar, you can leave it out!

Serving a Agua de Valencia

First of all, it is important that you have 500 ml of fresh orange juice. Do you still need to squeeze them? Do that first! If you bought it from the shop, you can put 500 ml in a measuring cup and pour it into a large can. Then as follows add 300 ml of cava. Then you need to add 100 ml gin plus 100 ml vodka. As you read, there are quite a few layers of alcohol in this drink but you don’t really taste that because of the orange juice. So watch out because this can be very treacherous!

Below is a schematic representation of a can Agua de Valencia:

The proportions of a can Agua de Valencia.

If you want to add a bit of sugar to the Agua de Valencia, do this first! Even before the fresh juice. If not, the cava could froth.

Are you planning to go to Valencia or are you going to Valencia soon? Then we recommend you to go to a terrace in Valencia to go and drink Agua de Valencia on the terrace. With the sun in your face and the typical Spanish drink you can enjoy your holiday to the fullest!

Celebrating New Year’s eve in Valencia could be rather different than celebrating it in your home country. It has its own traditions. Yet, you can’t start your year better than celebrating New Year’s Eve in Valencia. In this article we will explain the habits of the habitants and the best parties to go to after 24:00

Making the best memories on New Year’s Eve in Valencia!

In the evening (before 24:00) you could give a big house party but what most people do is just having dinner in a luxe restaurant. With New Year’s in Valencia you don’t have to worry about your money because you can already get a whole menu for 30 euros! You can share a nice meal with your friends and family and talk about the good and bad moments of 2018. But don’t forget the time while chatting because at twelve it is happening!

With ‘at twelve it is happening’ we don’t mean straight away it is 2019 and look at the fireworks! No, don’t forget to eat the grapes! This isn’t a joke, it’s a tradition. It all began when the village of Viñalopó in the province of Alicante had an exceptionally good grape harvest and decided to distribute the grapes at New Year’s Eve what would give luck for the new year. Since 1909 people are standing on the big square in Valencia and eat a grape at 12 o’clock on each chime, so 12 in total!

Eating 12 grapes for New Year’s in Valencia

Okay let’s go back to the evening: When you finished your last grape, congratulate your family and friends for the new year and the parties are going to begin!

Bad weather? Yes, unfortunately you have read that correctly. Also in Valencia it’s not always nice dry weather. It can also rain a lot in Valencia. Are you the unlucky person who’s in Valencia with bad weather? Don’t worry, even with this bad weather there are some nice activities Valencia.

Activities Valencia; fun and tasty options

Valencia is a great city for a bike ride through the beautiful Turia park but when it rains you probably don’t feel like biking. Fortunately, Valencia offers plenty of activities that can take place inside, Valencia has 3 indoor shopping centers, cozy restaurants where you can dine or have lunch, museums and the largest aquarium in Europe. Valencia is a place where you can also enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner. So when it’s a rainy day you can certainly choose to do this in one of the many nice restaurants in Valencia. Do you want to do some more activities Valencia then the following are definitely recommended:

L’Oceanogràfic

Shopping centers

In Valencia there are three large shopping centers. Next to the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias are two shopping centers. One is the Centro Comercial Aqua Multiespacio. This shopping center consists of four layers, of which the first two mainly contain clothing stores, cosmetics etc and the top two layers contain eateries.

On the other side of the shopping center Aqua is another shopping center, the Centro Comercial El Saler. This is a fairly large shopping center with all known stores such as H&M, ZARA, Stradivarius and many more. Also in this shopping center is a very large supermarket (Carrefour).

Yet another shopping center where you can shop really good is Nuevo Centro. Once again all well-known clothing stores such as the H&M, Bershka, ZARA, etc. are in this shopping center. Another nice thing about this shopping center is that there is a cinema within walking distance (Yelmo Cines) and this is one of the few cinemas in Valencia where the films are not dubbed.

In the center of Valencia you can find the department store ‘El Corte Inglès‘. The range goes from different clothing to shoes, perfume, make-up, personal care products and more. In addition, in the center of Valencia you will also find all ‘normal’ shops where you can shop all day long.

Foodmarkets

On a rainy day you can also visit the Mercado Central or the Mercado de Ruzafa. The Mercado Central is a market where you can do your groceries from Monday to Saturday until 14:00. You will find lots of fresh vegetables, fruit, meat, fish and delicacies. Besides the fact that you can get a lot of fresh products here, the building is certainly also worth the visit.

The Mercado de Ruzafa is also a food market with many fresh products. An advantage of the Mercado de Ruzafa is that it’s usually a bit more quiet and less touristy.

Another very nice, cozy market is the Mercado de Colon, this is not a food market where you can get all fresh products but a nice place to sit with friends or family and have something to eat and drink. A very lively place where you can enjoy the atmosphere.

Museums

In Valencia there are also plenty of museums that you could visit. It depends on your interest which museum is fun for you to visit of course. But two museums that we think are a good choice to visit are IVAM and Museu d’Història de València.

Located in the center of Valencia: Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno (IVAM) is a good idea for lovers of modern art. In this museum you will find a large collection of photographs and video, modern installations, paintings from the 20th century and sculpture.

Museu d’Història de València is the museum where the permanent exhibition of the museum is dedicated to the history of Valencia, divided into eight blocks. There is the Valencia of today and Valencia in the Middle Ages. For every different block there is a collection of objects and works of art representing the period.

So if it’s the case that it’s rainy weather when you are in Valencia, there are still plenty of activities that you could do without getting wet. It’s very likely that it won’t rain all the time so you will also be able to do activities outside. Most sights are outside, which ones there are? Find out in our Valencia sightseeing article.

A modern way to travel through Valencia is an electric scooter Valencia (also called e-scooter). The scooter was introduced in the beginning of 2018. With the e-scooter you can travel quick, easy and green through the beautiful city Valencia. As you walk through Valencia you will undoubtedly see someone racing around on this modern step. No movement with your leg is needed to move forward, the electric step will do it for you!

The popularity of the electric scooter Valencia

Not only tourist but also inhabitants use the electric scooter Valencia very frequently. The step is becoming one of the main options of public transportation in Valencia. Not only in Valencia but also in Barcelona and Madrid the electric scooter is gaining popularity.

There are two different types of e-scooters. A and B. Step A is a model with an average speed of 10 km/h. Model B can go up to 20 km/h! Two big companies introduced the e-step to Spain named: Limes and Bbuho.

Limes introduced the electric scooters Valencia which can be rent by using an app. It’s easy to use and good for the environment because the scooter drives on electrical power. However, not everyone thinks the same about it this scooter. The inhabitants are discussing the fact that using the steps on a footpath could be dangerous because the steps are going really fast. Also, the police already seized electric scooters because they were randomly on the street waiting for someone to pick them up.

The vicious of Valencia has decided to take measures to ensure that the steps won’t cause incidents. People who are riding on the footpad cannot go faster than 10 km/h. E-step type B is required to drive on the street or bike path. This rule applies the same for the bikes from the company: Bbuho, who launched 100 e-steps last summer.

You could also rent an e-scooter Valencia in one of the many rental stores. You could rent it based on the time of use. Renting a e-scooter costs around 18-23 euro’s.With the steps you won’t have to worry about a parking spots because you can fold the step very easily and bring it with you under your arms.

Enjoy the ride on your scooter and be careful on the speed limit and where you are driving!

You can find it everywhere: street art. The history of street art comes from scratching names into the walls of New York in the late 1960’s. Since then, a lot of people used street art to spread a message of social commentary, express their feelings or political ideas. You can see street art everywhere around the world, so in Valencia as well! Discover street art in Valencia.

Walk through the city and discover street art in Valencia

Do you like art? Then Valencia is the right place for you! The city is full of different kind of art. Not only in a museum but in the streets as well! You can see paintings on the walls of shops, on walls in the street and even on houses. There are several streets where you can discover street art in Valencia. This street art is inspired by the people, music and of course: the Spanish life.

Signature of David de Limón

Did you already discover the Ninja’s while walking in El Carmen? This black ninja is the signature of David de Limón. An illustrator, graphic designer and a real artist. El Carmen was the street where he grew up. David discovered his art in this street and now his signature is everywhere. The ninja stands for a masked man because he needs to hide himself. Street art is still considered as vandalism and with the ninja which is covered by a mask he can hide his face to stay anonymous. Yet, everywhere you look in this street you will see the signature of David de Limón (like a ninja).

Work of David de Limón

Not only David de Limón left his signature behind in this street. More famous artist has made the most incredible drawings on the walls of this street. For example: Juliette, an artist who takes part of the XLF-crew (an group of famous artists). Her drawings of a Japanese girl are her signature. The girl is called Kawaii, what means adorable in Japanese. The girl of Juliette’s painting always has her eyes closed. With her paintings she’s describing the life of the girl. In Juliette’s opinion the kawaii is a chameleon: sometimes happy, sometimes sad, sometimes alive and sometimes dead. She is always keeping a secret.

Work of Juliette

Another big talent in Valencia is the man behind the dark images images on the walls: Deih. A 35-year-old illustrator which is also working with XLF. His inspirations come from the media, comics, music and other artists. He loves the dark world which nobody knows, yet. In 2014 he painted a new mural located in the San Ramon street. An amazing image you’ll have to see!

You won’t only find street art in El Carmen, you can discover street art in Valencia as well in Plaza del Tossal (close to El Carmen). You can find impressive work of Escif, an anonymous artist who is famous all over the world. Or go to Calle de Beneficial where you can admire a lot of street works from artist that aren’t famous, but make the most beautiful images as well!

Work around Del Carmen

You are going to study, do an internship or you’re going to do a language course in Valencia, that’s great! But of course you also want to meet new people, do fun activities and go out with your new friends. That will not be a problem in Valencia since Erasmus Valencia is very active.

Erasmus Valencia; how, what, and when?

Valencia is a great city and you can easily spend 6 months without taking a step outside of Valencia. But Spain is big and there are so many things to see. It would be a shame if you didn’t see more of Spain than only Valencia. You can count on Happy Erasmus, an association that helps Erasmus students during their stay in Valencia.

They organize amazing trips to the most popular tourist destinations in Spain with a private coach and guided tours for cheap prices. There certainly is no shortage of Erasmus activities in and outside of Valencia. Besides the trips to other cities, Erasmus Valencia also offers pub crawls, pool parties, volleyball on the beach and special Erasmus evenings in clubs and pubs.

Erasmus Valencia, campfire at the beach

Website

Yes, all those activities are great, but you need certain information to be able to participate in these activities and trips. Fortunately, they have a number of tools for this. They have a website where you can find a lot of information and not only information about trips and activities but also practical information about accommodations, Spanish SIM cards, medical insurance and a lot of information about Valencia itself, such as how you can travel by public transport, nice restaurants and of course everything you need to know about the nightlife in Valencia.

Facebook

In addition to the website, several groups have been created on Facebook. You can find these under the name: Erasmus Valencia 2018-2019 (or your year of study). Link to the Facebook page can be found here. There are a number of different groups, specifically designed for searching and finding accommodations, parties and trips. Choice enough, you will not miss anything as a member of a Facebook group. A group is created for each year, so each year you can find the group under your study year.

The group also includes many messages from students who are still looking for an apartment, students who ask for help when traveling with public transport and of course reports about activities that have been organized. The nice thing is that you can help each other in this group. Everyone is kind of in the same situation. For example, if you have a question about public transport, you will certainly find useful answers.

With Erasmus Valencia you can help each other out

WhatsApp

Every year a WhatsApp group is created. You can place yourself in this group via a link. This is a super easy way to connect with people. You can quickly send a message to ask if there are people in the mood for a drink, no doubt that there will be people who are happy to accept your invitation. Again, everything that can be done in Valencia is also discussed in this group.

Happy Erasmus Card

Via the website of Happy Erasmus Valencia you can register for a Happy Erasmus Card. With the free Erasmus card you become part of Happy Erasmus Valencia and you stay informed of everything that happens in Valencia. With the card you can also get discounts at certain pubs and clubs.
With Erasmus Valencia you can be sure that your time in Valencia will be unforgettable. But in addition to all that partying, of course you also need to do a bit of studying, do you want to make this more fun? Be sure to read our study hotspots in Valencia.
