Malaga is the capital of the Province of Malaga, the second-most populous city of Andalusia and the sixth largest city of Spain! Malaga is one of the oldest cities in the world as it exists for 2,800 years already. You will see the beauty in the historical city center. This great city has a lot to offer, not only the city center but also a beach. Curious about what things to do in Malaga? Keep on reading!

Different things to do in Malaga

There are a lot of different activities you can do in Malaga. From cultural visits to having a nice evening out. In this article we have listed five things to do in Malaga, which you can do with your friends or family.

1. Puerto de Málaga

If you are fond of a port, you definitely need to go to this one! You can find the port at the Costa Del Sol. Walk from the city center to the beach via this beautiful port. At the port you can see a lot of different kind of boats while eating some delicious fresh fish. We definitely recommend to go there when the sun is almost going down. You will get a taste of the nice atmosphere of Malaga during the sunset.

All kind of boats in the port of Malaga

2. Dinner and drinks

Do you love food? You are in the right city! Especially for different kind of fish. There are many operators in the city who are organizing a food tour. You can do this tour private, so with your own friends or family, or you can do it with a group. This way you can meet all kind of new people! Just search food tour Malaga on the internet and you will find many sites. Are you looking for drinks rather than food? Malaga offers also pub crawls! For little money you can go to (usually) five different pubs and drink some beers or sangria. It’s a great way to meet new people.

Flamenco Malaga, the historical part of the flamenco dance

Flamenco Malaga was born in Andalusia, the south of Spain. It is a mix of different cultures, but which exact cultures is a little vague. There is not much information available about the origin of flamenco, because a lot of different cultures are involved by the flamenco. One thing is sure: the Gitanos (Spanish gypsies) played a big role. However, there are differences between the Spanish and Gitanos flamenco. Characteristics of the flamenco in general are: the base of this dance is music. Sometimes, dance and music are combined with different musical instruments. In flamenco, Arab sounds will be used and there will be a strong rhythm in the music. These days, flamenco is still important and alive. We found the 4 nicest hotspots for you where flamenco takes place.

Kelipe | Calle Alamos, 7

They are cheap, cosy and the perfect place to meet new people: student hotspots Malaga! Maybe you’re following a language course in this beautiful city, maybe you study abroad or maybe you are just celebrating your weekend/holiday. In all cases, it is never bad to visit places with a fair value for money. There are not many places mentioned on the internet where you can other students. Therefore, we did research to find nice places which are popular among students. Malaga is a great city for students, so that’s why we’ve made a short list of nice student hotspots Malaga to go to. For you, you as a student!

The best student hotspots Malaga for going out

The list we’ve made, contains several popular and affordable bars among students. When we got there, yes yes, the bars were full of students. Especially on Thursday, because Thursday is THE night to go out as a student. The city will be full of students (already) celebrating the weekend and enjoying their social life’s. Out of this list, there is no ‘best’ bar to hang out at, we really liked them all. It differs by person which one is the nicest, we would suggest: Try them all!

Boat (Copas) – Calle Juan de Padilla 24

One of the cheapest bars (or maybe the cheapest) in Malaga is Boat. Boat is a popular place among students to go to, because drinks are never as cheap as at this place. Students rarely stay at this place for a long time, because this is a place to get drinks before your night out starts. It is more an on-to-go place, a place where you drink some drinks and then leave for the ‘real’ party. Well-known at Boat are their ‘Copas’ (which means glass). These are 1L big cups, and you can get a few mixed drinks in them for only 3 euros! The gin-tonic and Bacardi cokes are really nice, but if you want to have a fancy cocktail, then you’ll pay 6 euros (which is also not really expensive for what you’ll get). The nice thing about this bar is that it is also located in the city centre of Malaga.

El Pimpi – Calle Granada 62

El Pimpi also belongs to the best student hotspots Malaga, because it is one of the most famous places among students. Almost every student in Malaga knows this bodega bar/restaurant. Yes, El Pimpi is a place where you can have some drinks while enjoying tapas dishes and where you can eat. This place is popular, so we would recommend you to make a reservation beforehand. Inside this bar, you will notice that the decoration is typically like a bodega. There are wine barrels placed at the walls, which makes this place a really cosy place. In spring/summer, you can take place outside. There you can find a cosy ‘Terrassa’, and you’ll have a beautiful view over there.

Casa Aranda – Herrería del Rey 3

This bar is well-known among students, because this bar has got the most delicious Churros of Malaga! You can get Churros in many bars or cafes, but these are really yummy. One portion Churros contains 3 of them. It doesn’t sound like a lot, but men, these are enormous and enormous delicious. You can order these with powder sugar, chocolate or Nutella. Have you ever tried Churros before? If you have, also try these and place a comment with a review below! Have you never tried Churros before? Please, try your first here if you’re in Malaga.

Il Laboratorio Trattoria – Calle Carretería 92

Il Laboratorio Trattoria is a bar and a restaurant in one. At the end of the day and during the night, you can drink here a nice beer or wine, and eat some tapas besides the drinks. Besides drinks and small dishes, you can also eat here. Especially on Sundays, then you can have a really nice brunch here. On a counter, there will be fresh yoghurts, croissants, small sandwiches, cupcakes and more tasty things to eat. They also have homemade fresh orange juice. Another nice thing about this bar is that they will have a big terrace in the summer. Mainly this terrace is filled with students by then. Il Laboratorio Trattoria has got a good value of price.

This is not exactly student hotspots Malaga, but in general, a place which is nice for going out as a student is Plaza de la Merced. It is located in the heart of the city center, and you can find a lot of nice bars and restaurants here.

More interested in Clubs? We recommend you club ‘Weekend’ (Plaza de la Merced 14) and club ‘Malafama’ (Carretería 92). Club Weekend is popular among students, because you can drink nice cocktails here and bring the evening alive! Club Malafama can be more interested for Erasmusstudents, because you will get here 5 euros discount on entrance. The visitors are around 18-25 years old, and they play as well international music as Spanish music.

If you have studied Spanish, or have been in Spain during Easter, then you must have heard of “Semana Santa”. It is the week before Easter that is also called the “Holy Week”, and is celebrated especially in Malaga and Seville. If you are in Spain during this period, we would recommend you to go and live Semana Santa in Malaga yourself. It will be unique experience that you must have experienced once in your life and will not forget ever again.

Semana Santa in Malaga

One of the reasons why Malaga is known for Semana Santa is because of the many processions that are held here during this week, from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday. During these processions, the suffering of Jesus is commemorated by the members of a brotherhood. There are several brotherhoods that walk through the streets of Malaga from their own village or district.

The brotherhoods are carrying “tronos” during the routes they travel; the routes can take up to 5 hours. The tronos are often silver or golden thrones with Jezus or Maria on it, that sometimes are carried by more than 200 people. In addition, they are decorated with candlesticks and flowers. Besides the brotherhoods, penitents are also involved in the processions, to make a confession or to make a sacrifice. Most dramatic processions during Semana Santa in Malaga take place on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.

Not only the brotherhoods that walk through the city are impressive to contemplate, but the combination of the tronos, melancholic music, incense and passion will leave you with a fierce impression. In addition, we must not forget that the party has more than 500 years of history, it is therefore of great importance for tourism in Spain.

The celebration of Semana Santa is especially popular in southern Spain, besides Semana Santa in Malaga you could also live this special tradition in cities like Seville, Cadiz or Cartagena. Remember that Semana Santa is not only visited by the Spaniards, as it is also very popular internationally – you will understand when you’ve lived it yourself.

Semana Santa in Seville

Are you in Malaga during Semana Santa and would you like to see the processions? Make sure you visit Alameda Principal, Calle Marqués de Larios and Calle Granada, from here you will surely see all the fraternities walking by and returning to their own village or neighborhood. Discover the whole schedule of this festival in Malaga.
