Time goes by fast, but we don’t mind at all because that’s why it’s already time for the biggest street festival in Valencia: Las Fallas Program 2020. The streets of the city are decorated with impressive, from smaller to gigantic created statues which are called Fallas.

Various activities will be arranged throughout the city and this all will be accompanied by lots of beautiful fireworks. Las Fallas 2020 starts on Sunday the 1st of March and ends on the 19th of March with ‘La Crema’. Since the biggest street festival of Europe will be for about three weeks, it is good to know what will take place where and at what time. La Mascletà and many more activities during Las Fallas in Valencia

The Las Fallas 2020 will officially start on Sunday March the 1st. This is traditionally done with a “La Mascletà” at Plaza Ayuntamiento at 14:00. The impressive firework show could be described in simply one word “BANG!”. It will be the loudest firework show you’ve ever witnessed (almost) no doubt! Can’t make it on March 1st? No worries, “La Mascletà” will be repeated on a daily basis until the end of Las Fallas 2020! Do you prefer to see the firework shows at night? Or maybe the light shows in Ruzafa while enjoying a the local speciality Agua de Valencia?

‘La Feria de Marisco de Galicia’ or ‘The seafood fair of Galicia’ will take place in the port of Valencia.

The biggest seafood fair of Galicia comes to Valencia

Over 1,000 square meters, more than 60 tons of seafood, 10,000 bottles of Albariño (a delicious Spanish wine), and approximately 90,000 attendees. The numbers say it all. MarisGalicia is by far the biggest event of the Galician gastronomy in Spain. This great event starts tomorrow in Valencia for the sixth year in a row.

Until the 30th of the same month Valencian locals, tourists, and students can enjoy the best seafood and fish brought directly from Galicia. The local specialties can be tasted in an ideal enclave for the occasion: in front of port 4 of the port of Valencia.

This event, which toured throughout Spain every year, focuses on the promotion of gastronomy, tourism and culture in Galicia.

To soak up the real Galician culture you should try the queso de tetilla, empanada, pulpo a feira, or one of the other delicious dishes.

The seafood is transported every day fresh from Galicia in refrigerated trucks to guarantee the freshness of the fish. In addition, the venue will recreate the atmosphere of the Galician markets and each stand will be specialized in a specific product from the area. There will be no lack of shellfish or Albariño (among other Galician wines) to live the Galician experience to the fullest.

To enjoy Galicia, you will have to travel to the port of Valencia, port number 4. The opening hours are from Monday to Sunday from 12:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and from 7:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Discover Barcelona Beach

It is the perfect place to relax: have a drink in one of its chiringuitos (beach bars), take a dive in the fresh waters and relax on the soft sand all day. On Barcelona Beach you can rent sunbeds and umbrellas for more or less 6€ each. Do you prefer quieter places to relax, the beach also has parts where it’s less crowded. Let’s show you all the ins and outs of Barcelona Beach.

La Barceloneta

This is the most important and best known part of Barcelona Beach. It is located near the center of the city and you can easily access it from the fishing district of the same name: La Barceloneta. Many tourists visit this part of the beach because it’s full of things to do, it has ping pong tables, seafood restaurants, beach bars, and they made the beach accessible to wheelchair users.

Bogatell

This beach is located in the district of Sant Marti, in the east part of Barcelona. They say it is one of the safest beaches of Barcelona and has a length of 600 meters. There are many facilities like volleyball nets, lifeguard, showers, restaurants, bars, parking… Besides that, the Olympic Port (Port Olímpic) it closely located to this beach. The port is named like this because it is situated near the Olympic Village of the district of Poblenou. In 1992, many athletes stayed here during the Olympic Games.

Sant Sebastià

Sant Sebastià Beach is located next to La Barceloneta Beach and starts at Passeig Joan de Borbó. Here starts the promenade and it is one of the favorite beaches of the locals. It once was a nude beach, but not anymore. It is easy accessible by public transport and, the beach has an area especially for disabled people, there are special showers and changing rooms, among others.

Mar Bella

Mar Bella Beach is also located in the district of Sant Marti. It is one of the newest beaches since it was made during the preparations of the Olympic Games in 1992. It has a nude part, but it also visited by many young people who live in this district. It also has some nice beach bars and at the end of the beach you’ll find sailing school that organizes water activities.

Nova Mar Bella

This is one of the quiet beaches of Barcelona and therefore visited by many locals and people from outside the city. However, it does have some chiringuitos and a volleyball court. So, do you prefer some relaxation? Or you don’t want to be surrounded by tourists, then go visit this beach.

Llevant

Llevant beach is made in 2006 and therefore the newest part of Barcelona Beach. It is very popular and located next Mar Bella Beach. They paid special attention to those whose mobility is limited: the parking areas are very closely located to the beach, adapted toilets, visable signage and wooden walkways.

The best things to do in Seville

Discover the best and most important things to do in Seville and don’t miss anything during your trip to this city!

1. Plaza de España

This is the first thing you have to discover when you are in Seville. Plaza de España is a square located in the Parque de María Luisa, the construction of this place was one of the biggest building projects in 1929, built for the Ibero-American Exposition. It’s a semi-circular square with a palace, a canal, fountains… The palace contains some of the administrative buildings of Seville, but also a gallery. The square showcases a mix of Mudéjar and Renaissance styles.

2. Real Alcázar

The Real Alcázar is a Royal Palace of built in the 14th century, being the oldest palace of Europe that is still being used – the King and Queen stay in this palace when they visit Seville. The palace is also built in the Mudéjar style, influenced by the Arab architecture. In the middle of the palace we’ll find an elongated pond surrounded by gardens. Some of the parts are built in a Renaissance style which makes it a very unique place to visit. To enter the palace you have to pay a ticket of 14 euros.

3. Cathedral of Seville

The Cathedral of Seville is another cultural sight you cannot miss while visiting Seville. It is the main church of the archdiocese of Seville, built in the Gothic style, which is also called “Catedral de Santa María de la Sede” in Spanish. It is a very important place to visit since it’s the largest church building in Europe after St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome and St Paul’s Cathedral in London. In 1987 it was registered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

4. La Giralda

The cathedral of Seville features a large bell tower called “La Giralda”, with a height of almost 100 meters. The tower was built by the Moors in the 12th century and later the Christians added the minaret in the bell tower. The Giralda is a perfect symbol of different architectural styles, of different civilizations – also declared a World Heritage Site.

5. The Triana district

The local people say that if you visit the Triana district, you will be able to really discover the culture of Seville – certainly one of the best things to do in Seville! It is located across the Guadalquivir river. In the 16th and 17th century this was the district where the artisans sold their crafts to the Spanish colonies. This is still visible when you walk through its streets; you’ll find the azulejo-tiles everywhere. The streets are colorful and all the houses have flowerpots on its facades.

6. Metropol Parasol

You must recognize this huge and mysterious building. It is the largest wooden structure in the world! Since 2011 it has been open for the public, you can buy a ticket and walk over the parasol and contemplate the city from a height of 28 meters. It is located in the heart of the city, on Plaza de Encarnación.

7. Casa de Pilatos

Besides the Royal Palace, another impressive building you should discover is the Casa de Pilatos, of an Italian Renaissance style and Mudéjar style. It is a fabulous example of Sevillian architecture of the 16th century, located on the Plaza de Pilatos, which will be definitely worth the visit. All walls are decorated with colorful tiles and the building is full of surprises. Let’s discover them yourself.

8. Parque de María Luisa

The last thing on our list with best things to do is visiting the María Luisa Park. It is located next to the famous Plaza de España. It is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city during your getaway in Seville. In the park you can relax and enjoy the sun, take a walk or ride a bicycle. The park also has some notable buildings and museums to discover.

Semana Santa in Spain, the Holy week before Easter

During Semana Santa in Spain there are many brotherhoods who take part in processions that tell the story of Jesus. Participants in these processions, nazareno’s, wear robes with a pointed hood and mask so they won’t be recognized. Although it might look like it, and many people think so, it has nothing to do with the ‘Ku Klux Klan’.

Another thing you will see in the processions are ‘pasos’. Pasos are constructions with a statue on it that often represent the suffering of Jesus Christ. These pasos will be carried by the brotherhoods through the city.

If you want to see a procession, make sure you will be on time because there will be many people around who can be very emotional.

Semana Santa in Malaga

One of the reasons why Malaga is known for Semana Santa is because of the many processions that are held here during this week, from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday. During these processions, the suffering of Jesus is commemorated by the members of a brotherhood. There are several brotherhoods that walk through the streets of Malaga from their own village or district.

The brotherhoods are carrying “tronos” during the routes they travel; the routes can take up to 5 hours. The tronos are often silver or golden thrones with Jezus or Maria on it, that sometimes are carried by more than 200 people. In addition, they are decorated with candlesticks and flowers. Besides the brotherhoods, penitents are also involved in the processions, to make a confession or to make a sacrifice. Most dramatic processions during Semana Santa in Malaga take place on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.

Not only the brotherhoods that walk through the city are impressive to contemplate, but the combination of the tronos, melancholic music, incense and passion will leave you with a fierce impression. In addition, we must not forget that the party has more than 500 years of history, it is therefore of great importance for tourism in Spain.

The celebration of Semana Santa is especially popular in southern Spain, besides Semana Santa in Malaga you could also live this special tradition in cities like Seville, Cadiz or Cartagena. Remember that Semana Santa is not only visited by the Spaniards, as it is also very popular internationally – you will understand when you’ve lived it yourself.

Why everybody should visit Las Fallas in Valencia

1. You are a student, so you have to

When you are in Valencia as a student there is no excuse to not live the experience of Las Fallas. You will discover the traditions of the Valencian population, with their special traditional clothing, weird interest in fireworks, as well as their way of partying all together, with family and friends on the streets, for almost a month! 2. The amazing dolls

From the 15th of March, the Valencian Fallas associations will start to build up these amazing dolls on all the streets of Valencia. They are called “Fallas” and each Falla exists of dolls, which they call “ninots”. Don’t underestimate these creations because some of them are more than 30 meters high and yes, they cost a lot of money.  When the Fallas are ready, they will be criticized by a jury, because one of the ninots will survive the fire on the last day of the festival. On March 19, all the Fallas will be set on fire during “La Crema”, but the one doll that is the most beautiful one will go to the Fallas Museum. Imagine that almost the whole city is full of creations like this, on every corner of the street – enough to discover!  

3. Nit del foc

On March 18th, Nit del foc takes place, which means: “The Night of Fire”. During this night, there will be an amazing show of fireworks around 1:30 am – yes, at night! There are some smaller shows between 15 – 18 of March, but the last one is the biggest, and absolutely the best one. Don’t forget that almost the whole city is going to visit this show, so there will be many people waiting there early.

4. La Mascleta

The first Mascleta is held when the festival starts, on the last Sunday of February. A Mascleta is a firework show that is held every day at 2 pm from 1 to 19 of March, on Plaza del Ayuntamiento (The City Hall Square of Valencia). Like we said before, they have a weird interest in fireworks, let’s explain this: since the Mascleta is held during the day you can only see smoke, sometimes some colors – if you are standing close – and a lot, A LOT, of bangs and noises. However, it is something you should have seen and lived together with the Valencian people once in your life, you’ll be amazed!

5. The flower offerings

It is not all about fireworks and partying, because Las Fallas is also about tradition. During “L’Ofrena de flors”, more than 100,000 members of the Fallas associations offer flowers to the Virgen de los Desamparados (the holy virgin of the needy), located on Plaza de la Virgen. They all bring red, white or pink carnations in traditional clothing to the statue. You can contemplate this offering yourself because it will take two days in total, and the result is incredible.

The three beaches of Valencia beach

The thing you first notice when you see Valencia beach is the fact that it’s huge! The beach can be divided into three different beaches, Las Arenas, La Malvarosa and Patacona.

Las Arenas

For dinner or a cocktail, Las Arenas is the ideal beach. Las Arenas is the part of the beach closest to the port of Valencia. In the port you find a few restaurants that are unknown by most tourists but definitely worth a visit. With a tremendous view on the port there is restaurant Dos Lunas Beach, an ideal place for dinner or a glass of wine.

Marina beach club is the beach club at the end of Valencia beach. During daytime the exclusive beach club is open for food, drinks and to enjoy the pool. It is also the ideal location for a night out, when they turn the beach club into a real club.

After Marina Beach Club there finally is the beach. The beach is more than 1 kilometer long and 135 meters wide. At the boulevard there are a lot of restaurants and bars where you can enjoy a delicious Paella Valenciana or a beer. One of our favorites is Miramar which is the ideal place to have lunch.

La Malvarosa

After the boulevard with a lot of restaurants and bars, La Malvarosa beach begins. This part of the Valencia beach has a very wide boulevard with a few very good restaurants as well. You will see a lot of Spaniards and tourist running, walking, riding their bike or roller skating across the boulevard. At the beach there are a lot of beach volleyball fields and football fields where locals of all ages come together to have fun on the beach of Valencia. Also for aquatics this is the ideal location.

Patacona

The last part of Valencia beach is Patacona. This part is very popular among locals and you will find not as much tourists here as on the other beaches of Valencia. A lot of Spaniards gather here to have a picnic at the edge of the beach. They usually bring tables and uncork a nice bottle of wine.

The beach has a few bars, famous and not so famous. The most famous bar at Patacona is La Mas Bonita, a bar at the boulevard with a nice terrace with sea view. They also have a precious garden on the other side. At La Mas Bonita you can order juices, drinks, sandwiches and last but not least, cake. Spaniards love cake as a snack and La Mas Bonita has an amazing assortment.

Three amazing beaches and a five months summer each year makes Valencia a great place to visit. Choose your favorite Valencia beach and have a nice day!
