Time goes by fast, but we don’t mind at all because that’s why it’s already time for the biggest street festival in Valencia: Las Fallas Program 2020. The streets of the city are decorated with impressive, from smaller to gigantic created statues which are called Fallas.

The complete Las Fallas Program 2020

Various activities will be arranged throughout the city and this all will be accompanied by lots of beautiful fireworks. Las Fallas 2020 starts on Sunday the 1st of March and ends on the 19th of March with ‘La Crema’. Since the biggest street festival of Europe will be for about three weeks, it is good to know what will take place where and at what time. To make sure you don’t miss anything of the impressive festivities we wrote down the official program of Las Fallas 2020 for you!

La Mascletà and many more activities during Las Fallas in Valencia

The Las Fallas 2020 will officially start on Sunday March the 1st. This is traditionally done with a “La Mascletà” at Plaza Ayuntamiento at 14:00. The impressive firework show could be described in simply one word “BANG!”. It will be the loudest firework show you’ve ever witnessed (almost) no doubt! Can’t make it on March 1st? No worries, “La Mascletà” will be repeated on a daily basis until the end of Las Fallas 2020! Do you prefer to see the firework shows at night? Or maybe the light shows in Ruzafa while enjoying a the local speciality Agua de Valencia?

A modern way to travel through Valencia is an electric scooter Valencia (also called e-scooter). The scooter was introduced in the beginning of 2018. With the e-scooter you can travel quick, easy and green through the beautiful city Valencia. As you walk through Valencia you will undoubtedly see someone racing around on this modern step. No movement with your leg is needed to move forward, the electric step will do it for you!

The popularity of the electric scooter Valencia

Not only tourist but also inhabitants use the electric scooter Valencia very frequently. The step is becoming one of the main options of public transportation in Valencia. Not only in Valencia but also in Barcelona and Madrid the electric scooter is gaining popularity.

There are two different types of e-scooters. A and B. Step A is a model with an average speed of 10 km/h. Model B can go up to 20 km/h! Two big companies introduced the e-step to Spain named: Limes and Bbuho.

Limes introduced the electric scooters Valencia which can be rent by using an app. It’s easy to use and good for the environment because the scooter drives on electrical power. However, not everyone thinks the same about it this scooter. The inhabitants are discussing the fact that using the steps on a footpath could be dangerous because the steps are going really fast. Also, the police already seized electric scooters because they were randomly on the street waiting for someone to pick them up.

The vicious of Valencia has decided to take measures to ensure that the steps won’t cause incidents. People who are riding on the footpad cannot go faster than 10 km/h. E-step type B is required to drive on the street or bike path. This rule applies the same for the bikes from the company: Bbuho, who launched 100 e-steps last summer.

You could also rent an e-scooter Valencia in one of the many rental stores. You could rent it based on the time of use. Renting a e-scooter costs around 18-23 euro’s.With the steps you won’t have to worry about a parking spots because you can fold the step very easily and bring it with you under your arms.

Enjoy the ride on your scooter and be careful on the speed limit and where you are driving!

You are going to study, do an internship or you’re going to do a language course in Valencia, that’s great! But of course you also want to meet new people, do fun activities and go out with your new friends. That will not be a problem in Valencia since Erasmus Valencia is very active.

Erasmus Valencia; how, what, and when?

Valencia is a great city and you can easily spend 6 months without taking a step outside of Valencia. But Spain is big and there are so many things to see. It would be a shame if you didn’t see more of Spain than only Valencia. You can count on Happy Erasmus, an association that helps Erasmus students during their stay in Valencia.

They organize amazing trips to the most popular tourist destinations in Spain with a private coach and guided tours for cheap prices. There certainly is no shortage of Erasmus activities in and outside of Valencia. Besides the trips to other cities, Erasmus Valencia also offers pub crawls, pool parties, volleyball on the beach and special Erasmus evenings in clubs and pubs.

Erasmus Valencia, campfire at the beach

Website

Yes, all those activities are great, but you need certain information to be able to participate in these activities and trips. Fortunately, they have a number of tools for this. They have a website where you can find a lot of information and not only information about trips and activities but also practical information about accommodations, Spanish SIM cards, medical insurance and a lot of information about Valencia itself, such as how you can travel by public transport, nice restaurants and of course everything you need to know about the nightlife in Valencia.

Facebook

In addition to the website, several groups have been created on Facebook. You can find these under the name: Erasmus Valencia 2018-2019 (or your year of study). Link to the Facebook page can be found here. There are a number of different groups, specifically designed for searching and finding accommodations, parties and trips. Choice enough, you will not miss anything as a member of a Facebook group. A group is created for each year, so each year you can find the group under your study year.

The group also includes many messages from students who are still looking for an apartment, students who ask for help when traveling with public transport and of course reports about activities that have been organized.

Valencia is the friendliest city to ride your bike in Spain, well… that’s what people say. When you read this on the internet you are expecting that you can hop on your iron friend and while cycling, enjoying this beautiful city. Although this is true, you also have to be careful because they are not as used to cyclists in Valencia as they are in the Netherlands for instance. To help you out, here are some tips about how to safely cycle in Valencia.

Safely cycle in Valencia, it is possible!

Over the years the government tried to get more bicycle paths throughout the city. At the tourist parts like the Turia park you can cycle safely because of the bicycle paths, but in the city center it’s more of a challenge since some parts still miss bicycle paths. This makes safely cycle in Valencia a challenge but with these tips you will make way!

The street of Valencia

#1 Cycle with confidence! If the bicycle path stops you are supposed to cycle on the road. Be careful while doing this because the Spaniards are not very used to groups of cyclists driving on the road. Make sure you stay as much to the right as you can to stay safe. Also, look around really good, because maybe there is a bicycle path on the other side of the street. If so, always choose the bicycle path for your own safety.

#2 Do you think it is quite scary to cycle on the road? The footpath is always an option! Hop off your bike and walk with your iron friend next to you over the footpath. In this way you aren’t an obstacle for the other pedestrians.

#3 Do you need to find your way with our good old friend Google maps? Click on the walk route! The route for cars might be faster, but if you choose that one, Google really thinks you are with a car and before you know, you will end up on the high way. Once again, make sure you hop off your bike if Google tells you to go on the sidewalks, cycling on the footpaths is illegal in Valencia.

#4 Watch out for the one-way roads. Back home you could maybe go around the car but in here you can’t. If you notice that you ended up in a one-way road look to see if you are going in the right direction. If not, step of your bike and walk for a bit on the footpath.

Lock your bike

#5 After your safe trip, you need to park your bike. Always lock your bike really well. There are a lot of spots where you can secure your bike to a pole. If there isn’t room anymore, try to find another place. Locking your bike to a tree is illegal so please look for a parking spot as you can see on the picture above. Also, don’t secure your bike just with one lock. So, one lock for your saddle, one for your wheel in front, one for the wheel behind and one for your bike in general. Unfortunately, bikes or parts of it get stolen too often in Valencia.

As long you will follow these steps (and of course the law) you can Safely cycle in Valencia. Enjoy the adventure of tour de Valencia.

La Tomatina, nowadays a well-known event from Spanish ground. This tomato throwing festival was born at the last Wednesday of August 1945, and this year you can also join this event on the last Wednesday of August 2018. The tomato fight was invented by some young people who started a tomato fight with tomatoes from a market. One year later, these guys went to the same place again, and this time they brought tomatoes from home. In the early 50’s, the tomato fights were banned by the police. Later on the festivity was allowed again, because the people spoke. The tomato throwing festival, La tomatina, became a Festivity of International Tourist Interest by the Secretary Department of Tourism in 2002. It had become a very successful event.

Useful information you must know before entering La tomatina

This year, La tomatina will also take place in Buñol. The official organisation of this tomato throwing event created some rules to keep the event safe and awesome. It is possible to buy tickets online and don’t worry about transport and accommodation. You have to be a little prepared for tomatina, otherwise you’ll be buried in tomato smash. That is the reason why we wrote down some useful information you must know before entering La tomatina.

Bunol

Perhaps you have not heard about this town in the region of Valencia before, but the tomato throwing festival will take place in Buñol. This town is located 40 kilometres from Valencia (city). Buñol has got around 10.000 inhabitants. Do you want to know where you can have typically Spanish food or what to do in Buñol besides La tomatina? Click here.

Rules

La tomatina is held on the last Wednesday of August.

Tomatina begins at 11.00 with a bang and ends with another bang at 12.00.

Do not bring bottles or hard objects.

Do not tear or throw your or others’ shirts.

Squash the tomatoes before you throw them.

Keep a safe distance of the lorries.

Stop throwing tomatoes when you hear the 2nd bang.

Follow security and staff directions.

Backpacks, bags, cameras or any other object that could be the cause of harm are not allowed to enter.

Tickets

For around 10 euros you can buy a ticket for La tomatina. You can buy these tickets online at the official website. It is also possible to buy combination tickets. Stoketravel offers combination tickets including drinks and accommodation.

Transport

It is possible to rent a car from Valencia to Buñol, but you can also travel by train. Antother option is to go by bus. Several companies will offer tours to La tomatina, like Stoketravel.

Accommodation

Beforehand, it could be of interest knowing that Buñol has not got a wide range of accommodation possibilities. It would be better if you book a hotel or apartment, a longer time before the festival takes place. Another option is to book an accommodation in Valencia, in case of that you have to think about transport (see transport above).

Tips

Wear clothes/shoes which you will not wear again after La tomatina.

Wear comfortable shoes.

Bring swimming goggles, the tomato juice can be really painful for your eyes.

Bring clean clothes for after the tomato throwing festival.

There is a good train connection between Buñol and Valencia, so having an accommodation in Valencia is easy and possible.

Do not bring stuff that are not allowed to take (see rules).

Do not ensure that you will be the target.

Turn your tomato-mood on!

¡Hasta pronto en Buñol y Valencia!

¡Vamos! You’re going to Valencia for an internship or to study for several months. Of course with the Spanish fiestas, the Mediterranean climate and the treasures that this city beholds in the back of your mind. It sounds awesome and believe me, it is! But (somehow there is always a but) no one warns you about the stress and hassle it can bring. It seems like everybody, who has been abroad for a study or an internship, forgets about all the hassle they’ve experienced. That’s why we made a list with tips and useful sites for your search to a student apartment in Valencia.

6 useful sites to find your student apartment in Valencia

The amount of student apartments in Valencia are unbelievable and the rental prices are even better. The most student apartments are notable cheaper than, for example, in the Netherlands and they’re almost always furnished. If you’ve already been looking for a student apartment in Valencia you might have noticed that most of them are located in the street ‘Blasco Ibáñez’. Which is the place-to-be for the students in Valencia, because it’s near the universities. If you’re going to do an internship you might want to take a look at student apartments somewhere else in the city, closer to the company where you’re going to do your internship.

Uni-places

Uni-places offers a huge amount of apartments, enough choice if you’re looking for a student apartment in Valencia (and other cities in Spain), in different quarters/neighborhoods. Uniplaces charges a ‘one-time service fee’, the amount differs per room, but it’s below €100, -.

Housing anywhere

It’s the same concept as Uniplaces and Housinganywhere’s ‘one-time service fee’ is comparable to Uniplaces.

Spot a home

Also comparable to the sites above, they offer an enormous amount of apartments. However, the ‘one-time service fee’ Spot a Home charges is generally higher than they charge at Housinganywhere or Uniplaces.

Be roomers

Beroomers offers the option to move in with a host-family. The apartments they offer and the ‘one-time service fee’ are more expensive than they charge/ask at the other sites.

Foto casa

Besides renting student apartments in Valencia, Fotocasa also offers you to buy an apartment or rent a ‘holiday-home’. It’s not clear if you have to pay a ‘one-time service fee’ or other fees.

Stage in Spanje

‘Stage in Spanje‘ (internship in Spain) helps students, who want to go on an internship in Valencia, to find a suitable internship. Besides that, the company supervises the students during the ‘job-application’ process and they also seek them a suitable student apartment in Valencia. In addition, the student will also be picked up from the airport and be brought to his/her apartment. The costs for this service are €400, – (excl. tax), but that does mean that they’ll arrange everything for you (you still have to pay your monthly rent).

Extra tips

I’ve been living in Valencia for about three weeks and oh boy I’ve seen and ran in number of things which I’d like to have been warned about in advance. Don’t get me wrong, if I’d known these things I still would’ve gone to Valencia to do my internship but it would’ve been nice to know. Hence some extra tips:

Erasmus Grant

Try to be early with your Erasmus Grant application (if you qualify for this). Your university has a page on its website containing all the Erasmus data and a ‘step-by-step plan’ on how to apply for your Erasmus Grant.

Medication

If you have to bring medication for several months, you should try to arrange this as far in advance as possible. If you are travelling to a Schengen country and want to take medicines with you that fall under the Opium Act, you will need to have a Schengen certificate.

Services

Keep in mind that a lot of things can be less luxurious than you’re used to. For example: There is no central heating in the buildings here, that means that your student apartment can be very cold in the winter-months.

Roommates

When you’re going to live in a student apartment you’re going to have to deal with roommates. These roommates are probably from another country and have other habits than you, they speak another language and that can be the cause for a lot of problems. Try to make some common house rules at the beginning of your stay.

One-time service fees

As you may have read, most of the sites that function as a mediator, are going to ask for a one-time service fee. The amounts very per site.

¡Buena suerte!

Did you know Valencia is a perfect city to discover by bike? There are no mountains and the city has more than 120 km (74 miles) bike paths. The bike system Valenbisi Valencia is a great way to do so.

What is Valenbisi Valencia?

If you want to use a bicycle more than once during your stay in Valencia, the Valenbisi is a great option. You can find 2.750 bikes at 275 different stations in Valencia. We will explain you exactly how the Valenbisi Valencia system works.

There are different types of subscriptions to use the Valenbisi. The two most interesting options are the long-term subscription for one year and the weekly subscription for 7 consecutive days of bike pleasure.

Mobilis card

To be able to use the Valenbisi as soon as possible, it is smart to buy a “Móbilis” card first. This card can be used for all kinds of public transport and can be bought at one of the tobaccos stores (Tabacos in Spanish). This way you can immediately use the bikes and do not have to wait 15 to 20 days until your Valenbisi card arrives when you order it online.

Once you have your Mobilis card, you have to register on the website of Valenbisi. By entering your personal data and the card number of your Mobilis card, the card will be linked to your personal account.

To use de Valenbisi system you need Visa or MasterCard, the subscription costs will be charged to your bank account.

Long-term Valenbisi subscription

The first option is a long-term subscription for one year. The annual costs of a yearly subscription are:

– Mobilis card + minimal deposit (€10 for 10 trips with public transport): €11,-
– Long-term subscription (1 year) of Valenbisi: €29,21
– The first 30 minutes of every trip are free
– From 30 to 60 minutes you pay €0,52
– After 60 minutes you pay €2,08 for every 60 minutes

Weekly Valenbisi subscription

The second option is a weekly subscription, you can buy this card at one of the Valenbisi stations. With this subscription you can enjoy the Valenbisi service for one week with an unlimited number of journeys. The cost of a weekly subscription is as follows:

– Cost of the weekly subscription: €13,30
– The first 30 minutes of every trip are free
– From 30 to 60 minutes you pay €1,04
– After 60 minutes you pay €2,00 for every 60 minutes

As you can see, the first 30 minutes of every trip are free. A budget tip for you: when you return your bike to one of the stations within 30 minutes, you can rent the same bike again immediately, that way you can ride another 30 minutes for free.

At every Valenbisi station you will find a pole with an exact explanation of how to rent the bike.

Take a look at this page to see where you can find the 275 Valenbisi stations in Valencia. Valenbisi also has an app, with this app you can see how many bikes there are available per station. You can also check if there is place to park your bike. To download the app go to the Apple store or Google play store.

Enjoy your ride!
