Shopping centers

In Valencia there are three large shopping centers. Next to the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias are two shopping centers. One is the Centro Comercial Aqua Multiespacio. This shopping center consists of four layers, of which the first two mainly contain clothing stores, cosmetics etc and the top two layers contain eateries.

On the other side of the shopping center Aqua is another shopping center, the Centro Comercial El Saler. This is a fairly large shopping center with all known stores such as H&M, ZARA, Stradivarius and many more. Also in this shopping center is a very large supermarket (Carrefour).

Yet another shopping center where you can shop really good is Nuevo Centro. Once again all well-known clothing stores such as the H&M, Bershka, ZARA, etc. are in this shopping center. Another nice thing about this shopping center is that there is a cinema within walking distance (Yelmo Cines) and this is one of the few cinemas in Valencia where the films are not dubbed.

In the center of Valencia you can find the department store ‘El Corte Inglès‘. The range goes from different clothing to shoes, perfume, make-up, personal care products and more. In addition, in the center of Valencia you will also find all ‘normal’ shops where you can shop all day long.

Foodmarkets

On a rainy day you can also visit the Mercado Central or the Mercado de Ruzafa. The Mercado Central is a market where you can do your groceries from Monday to Saturday until 14:00. You will find lots of fresh vegetables, fruit, meat, fish and delicacies. Besides the fact that you can get a lot of fresh products here, the building is certainly also worth the visit.

The Mercado de Ruzafa is also a food market with many fresh products. An advantage of the Mercado de Ruzafa is that it’s usually a bit more quiet and less touristy.

Another very nice, cozy market is the Mercado de Colon, this is not a food market where you can get all fresh products but a nice place to sit with friends or family and have something to eat and drink. A very lively place where you can enjoy the atmosphere.

Museums

In Valencia there are also plenty of museums that you could visit. It depends on your interest which museum is fun for you to visit of course. But two museums that we think are a good choice to visit are IVAM and Museu d’Història de València.

Located in the center of Valencia: Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno (IVAM) is a good idea for lovers of modern art. In this museum you will find a large collection of photographs and video, modern installations, paintings from the 20th century and sculpture.

Museu d’Història de València is the museum where the permanent exhibition of the museum is dedicated to the history of Valencia, divided into eight blocks. There is the Valencia of today and Valencia in the Middle Ages. For every different block there is a collection of objects and works of art representing the period.

So if it’s the case that it’s rainy weather when you are in Valencia, there are still plenty of activities that you could do without getting wet. It’s very likely that it won’t rain all the time so you will also be able to do activities outside. Most sights are outside, which ones there are? Find out in our Valencia sightseeing article.

You can find it everywhere: street art. The history of street art comes from scratching names into the walls of New York in the late 1960’s. Since then, a lot of people used street art to spread a message of social commentary, express their feelings or political ideas. You can see street art everywhere around the world, so in Valencia as well! Discover street art in Valencia.

Walk through the city and discover street art in Valencia

Do you like art? Then Valencia is the right place for you! The city is full of different kind of art. Not only in a museum but in the streets as well! You can see paintings on the walls of shops, on walls in the street and even on houses. There are several streets where you can discover street art in Valencia. This street art is inspired by the people, music and of course: the Spanish life.

Signature of David de Limón

Did you already discover the Ninja’s while walking in El Carmen? This black ninja is the signature of David de Limón. An illustrator, graphic designer and a real artist. El Carmen was the street where he grew up. David discovered his art in this street and now his signature is everywhere. The ninja stands for a masked man because he needs to hide himself. Street art is still considered as vandalism and with the ninja which is covered by a mask he can hide his face to stay anonymous. Yet, everywhere you look in this street you will see the signature of David de Limón (like a ninja).

Work of David de Limón

Not only David de Limón left his signature behind in this street. More famous artist has made the most incredible drawings on the walls of this street. For example: Juliette, an artist who takes part of the XLF-crew (an group of famous artists). Her drawings of a Japanese girl are her signature. The girl is called Kawaii, what means adorable in Japanese. The girl of Juliette’s painting always has her eyes closed. With her paintings she’s describing the life of the girl. In Juliette’s opinion the kawaii is a chameleon: sometimes happy, sometimes sad, sometimes alive and sometimes dead. She is always keeping a secret.

Work of Juliette

Another big talent in Valencia is the man behind the dark images images on the walls: Deih. A 35-year-old illustrator which is also working with XLF. His inspirations come from the media, comics, music and other artists. He loves the dark world which nobody knows, yet. In 2014 he painted a new mural located in the San Ramon street. An amazing image you’ll have to see!

You won’t only find street art in El Carmen, you can discover street art in Valencia as well in Plaza del Tossal (close to El Carmen). You can find impressive work of Escif, an anonymous artist who is famous all over the world. Or go to Calle de Beneficial where you can admire a lot of street works from artist that aren’t famous, but make the most beautiful images as well!

Work around Del Carmen

Valencia has become a very popular city in recent years and Valencia sightseeing as well. Many tourists visit Valencia to enjoy the pleasant weather and all the beauty that the city has to offer. Valencia is a great city to visit all year round. So are you planning on going to Valencia soon, but have no idea which sights you would like to visit? With this article we will guide you along the way. The sights of Valencia that you have to visit can be found below.

Valencia sightseeing; a list of sights you must have seen

Valencia sightseeing, there are plenty of sights to find in this beautiful city. Most of these sights can be found in the historic center of Valencia or near Jardin del Turia. Some of them are just a bit further from the center, but they are also fairly easy to visit by bus, metro and even by bike.

Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències

Of course, the best known sight is Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències (the City of Arts and Sciences) Type “Valencia” on Google and this is the first thing you’ll see. Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias was designed by Santiago Calatrava, a world-famous Spanish architect. The building complex can be found in the Jardín del Turia (Turia park). Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias consists of six different buildings and it will not surprise you that this futuristic building complex owes its fame to the remarkable architecture. You can walk through the city gardens, conduct small scientific experiments in the Science Museum and visit the opera house.

Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències

Jardines del Turia

A river that often flooded so the government decided to make it a park. This park covers about 9 km and there are always people in the park. You will encounter many walkers, cyclists and runners. It is a beautiful park where you will see all kinds of different plant species and the most beautiful flowers. There are many bridges all over the park, the Puenta de las Flores (flower bridge) is a well-known landmark. For the Palau de la Música, a concert hall (where there are also concerts on the regular and exhibitions) you will find a beautiful pond with fountains. Enough reasons why the Turia park is certainly worthwhile to cycle or walk through during your time in Valencia.

Mercado Central

The central market hall is an indoor market in the old center of Valencia. This market hall was designed in Art Nouveau style at the beginning of the last century. For the locals, the market hall is a popular place to get daily fresh products such as vegetables, fruit, meat, fish, herbs and cheese. The building has a beautiful architecture both on the inside and outside and is completely built out of glass, iron and ceramics.

The Mercado Central dome

Plaza del Ayuntamiento

The Plaza del Ayuntamiento is the largest plaza of old Valencia. A beautiful large plaza with a beautiful fountain. At the plaza is the town hall with a graceful facade, the balcony, the marble staircase and a ballroom full of mirrors which makes it absolutely worth a visit. Also located at the plaza is the post office which has a beautiful ceiling. Located at the plaza you have several restaurants and shops where you will enjoy yourself. Do you get hungry after a day of sightseeing? Look at our list of the best restaurants in Ruzafa.

Catedral de Santa Maria

The cathedral de Santa Maria is located in the center of Valencia. The cathedral was built between 1262 and 1356. The cathedral was built in the Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque styles. The outside of the cathedral looks beautiful but you should also have a look at the inside because that is definitely worth it. The altar has many colors and gold which will immediately attract your attention. If you are in Valencia on Thursday you should definitely visit the cathedral because at 12 o’clock there will be a special ritual. A water tribunal (El Tribunal de las Aguas) is then held at the Puerto de los Apostoles (the apostle door). This is the oldest legal system in Europe. During this tradition, the judges of water rights are pronounced here by eight judges.

Catedral de Santa Maria

This list for Valencia sightseeing will definitely be able to contribute to a wonderful and impressive time in Valencia! But in addition to these 5 places of interest, Valencia also has a beautiful beach, do you want to know more about this? Then you should read our blog about Valencia beach.

23 June is the longest day of the Gregorian calendar and has (of course) the shortest night. This is also celebrated in Spain, where the Catalans and Valencians top everyone. This party is called the Night of San Juan. There are a lot of bonfires at the beaches, people eat, drink, dance and celebrate this night to together on the 24th.

Origin of the night of San Juan

When the sun sets on June 23th, Saint John’s (San Juan) eve is celebrated. The Feast of Saint John is celebrated on the 24th of June, with bonfires and partying, this is also referred to as Midsummer in the Northern hemisphere.

The myth is that a lot of strange things can occur on the shortest night of the year. Pagan gods, for example, would show up during the night. During the night of San Juan people will show their gratitude and show the realization that ‘heavier seasons’ are coming. During the night of San Juan, everything revolves around change. The passing of day and night, fire and water. The fire purifies and the water restores, refreshes and rejuvenates.

The night of San Juan Valencia

The night of San Juan Valencia will be celebrated exuberantly. People come together, talk, eat, dance, laugh and make music with each other, friends, but also strangers. Bonfires are made, people barbecue together and they drink together. In Valencia these activities take place on different beaches. The most famous beaches are Playa las Arenas, Playa Patacona and Playa Malvarosa.

This year the night of San Juan is celebrated on Sunday the 24th of June and the spectacle will take place in the night of the 24th/25th. In the end of the afternoon wood will be gathered together and will be built up into one big pile, which of course will be put into flames a few hours later.

The night of San Juan Alicante

This special night will also be celebrated in Alicante, even more exuberant than in Valencia. There will be parades, fireworks shows, flower offerings and just like in Valencia there will be bonfires. We definitely recommend you to go there if you’re around!

You must have heard of it once before – and if you don’t, well today is the day to discover it – Las Fallas in Valencia. The biggest festival of Valencia, visited by thousands of people from the whole world every year. It starts at the last Sunday of February and ends the 19th of March, with the last week as most important part. But why is it so popular?

Why everybody should visit Las Fallas in Valencia

1. You are a student, so you have to

When you are in Valencia as a student there is no excuse to not live the experience of Las Fallas. You will discover the traditions of the Valencian population, with their special traditional clothing, weird interest in fireworks, as well as their way of partying all together, with family and friends on the streets, for almost a month! Discover more about visiting Las Fallas as a student here.

2. The amazing dolls

From the 15th of March, the Valencian Fallas associations will start to build up these amazing dolls on all the streets of Valencia. They are called “Fallas” and each Falla exists of dolls, which they call “ninots”. Don’t underestimate these creations because some of them are more than 30 meters high and yes, they cost a lot of money. When the Fallas are ready, they will be criticized by a jury, because one of the ninots will survive the fire on the last day of the festival. On March 19, all the Fallas will be set on fire during “La Crema”, but the one doll that is the most beautiful one will go to the Fallas Museum. Imagine that almost the whole city is full of creations like this, on every corner of the street – enough to discover!

3. Nit del foc

On March 18th, Nit del foc takes place, which means: “The Night of Fire”. During this night, there will be an amazing show of fireworks around 1:30 am – yes, at night! There are some smaller shows between 15 – 18 of March, but the last one is the biggest, and absolutely the best one. Don’t forget that almost the whole city is going to visit this show, so there will be many people waiting there early.

4. La Mascleta

The first Mascleta is held when the festival starts, on the last Sunday of February. A Mascleta is a firework show that is held every day at 2 pm from 1 to 19 of March, on Plaza del Ayuntamiento (The City Hall Square of Valencia). Like we said before, they have a weird interest in fireworks, let’s explain this: since the Mascleta is held during the day you can only see smoke, sometimes some colors – if you are standing close – and a lot, A LOT, of bangs and noises. However, it is something you should have seen and lived together with the Valencian people once in your life, you’ll be amazed!

5. The flower offerings

It is not all about fireworks and partying, because Las Fallas is also about tradition. During “L’Ofrena de flors”, more than 100,000 members of the Fallas associations offer flowers to the Virgen de los Desamparados (the holy virgin of the needy), located on Plaza de la Virgen. They all bring red, white or pink carnations in traditional clothing to the statue. You can contemplate this offering yourself because it will take two days in total, and the result is incredible.

We have given you 5 reasons why you should visit Las Fallas in Valencia, but there is so much more to see! Such as the light shows in Calle Cuba and Calle Sueca, the fire procession in Calle Colon or the many churros and food trucks around the whole city. Something that should be discovered all by yourself!

More than five months a year it is summer in Valencia. The beaches are amazing and if you are in Valencia, you should definitely pay Valencia beach a visit. The beach in Valencia is more than 2 miles long so it is nice to know where you should go, there are a few places you cannot miss.

The three beaches of Valencia beach

The thing you first notice when you see Valencia beach is the fact that it’s huge! The beach can be divided into three different beaches, Las Arenas, La Malvarosa and Patacona.

Las Arenas

For dinner or a cocktail, Las Arenas is the ideal beach. Las Arenas is the part of the beach closest to the port of Valencia. In the port you find a few restaurants that are unknown by most tourists but definitely worth a visit. With a tremendous view on the port there is restaurant Dos Lunas Beach, an ideal place for dinner or a glass of wine.

Dos Lunas Beach Valencia website

Marina beach club is the beach club at the end of Valencia beach. During daytime the exclusive beach club is open for food, drinks and to enjoy the pool. It is also the ideal location for a night out, when they turn the beach club into a real club.

Marina Beach Club in Valencia

After Marina Beach Club there finally is the beach. The beach is more than 1 kilometer long and 135 meters wide. At the boulevard there are a lot of restaurants and bars where you can enjoy a delicious Paella Valenciana or a beer. One of our favorites is Miramar which is the ideal place to have lunch.

La Malvarosa

After the boulevard with a lot of restaurants and bars, La Malvarosa beach begins. This part of the Valencia beach has a very wide boulevard with a few very good restaurants as well. You will see a lot of Spaniards and tourist running, walking, riding their bike or roller skating across the boulevard. At the beach there are a lot of beach volleyball fields and football fields where locals of all ages come together to have fun on the beach of Valencia. Also for aquatics this is the ideal location.

Watersports in Valencia

Patacona

The last part of Valencia beach is Patacona. This part is very popular among locals and you will find not as much tourists here as on the other beaches of Valencia. A lot of Spaniards gather here to have a picnic at the edge of the beach. They usually bring tables and uncork a nice bottle of wine.

The beach has a few bars, famous and not so famous. The most famous bar at Patacona is La Mas Bonita, a bar at the boulevard with a nice terrace with sea view. They also have a precious garden on the other side. At La Mas Bonita you can order juices, drinks, sandwiches and last but not least, cake. Spaniards love cake as a snack and La Mas Bonita has an amazing assortment.

La Mas Bonita at Patacona beach in Valencia

Three amazing beaches and a five months summer each year makes Valencia a great place to visit. Choose your favorite Valencia beach and have a nice day!
