Malaga is the capital of the Province of Malaga, the second-most populous city of Andalusia and the sixth largest city of Spain! Malaga is one of the oldest cities in the world as it exists for 2,800 years already. You will see the beauty in the historical city center. This great city has a lot to offer, not only the city center but also a beach. Curious about what things to do in Malaga? Keep on reading!

Different things to do in Malaga

There are a lot of different activities you can do in Malaga. From cultural visits to having a nice evening out. In this article we have listed five things to do in Malaga, which you can do with your friends or family.

1. Puerto de Málaga

If you are fond of a port, you definitely need to go to this one! You can find the port at the Costa Del Sol. Walk from the city center to the beach via this beautiful port. At the port you can see a lot of different kind of boats while eating some delicious fresh fish. We definitely recommend to go there when the sun is almost going down. You will get a taste of the nice atmosphere of Malaga during the sunset.

All kind of boats in the port of Malaga

2. Dinner and drinks

Do you love food? You are in the right city! Especially for different kind of fish. There are many operators in the city who are organizing a food tour. You can do this tour private, so with your own friends or family, or you can do it with a group. This way you can meet all kind of new people! Just search food tour Malaga on the internet and you will find many sites. Are you looking for drinks rather than food? Malaga offers also pub crawls! For little money you can go to (usually) five different pubs and drink some beers or sangria. It’s a great way to meet new people.

It’s both made out of red wine, both fresh, and both a typical Spanish drink. Yet, both have a different taste. In this article we will tell you the difference with tinto de Verano vs Sangria and the history behind it. Just between us, did you know what you were drinking?

Tinto de Verano vs Sangria: who will win?

Well, this isn’t really a contest but if you we look at the drink the Spaniards mainly order: Tinto de Verano wins from Sangria! But most touristic people choose Sangria over Tinto de Verano, so it’s a draw! Below you can see the ingredients of Tinto de Verano vs Sangria, you choose which team wins!

Vargas or Tinto de Verano?

Just as with Agua de Valencia, there exists a theory about this Spanish drink. The drink is invented in the years of 1920 by the Vargas Sales located next to a sandy road to El Brilliante. The owner of this place was Don Federico Vargas who sold a lot of his wine (Valdepeñas) to his customers until their body had enough of it and didn’t want to have it anymore. Don Federico Vargas invented to add soda to the drink to make the drink softer. The people loved it and called it Un Vargas, soon after people started calling it Tinto de Verano. There also exists a theory for the name Varga. The followers of this theory argue that the name Varga comes from the combination of words of the ingredients Vagar used: Valdepeñas and gaseosa.

Tinto de Verano is quite easy to make. The drink normally consists of two elements namely: red wine and gaseosa (which is the general name for carbonated drinks or sodas). The mixer people mostly prefer is a mild and low sugar carbonated drink but you can choose any soda you prefer. For instance: bitter lemon with carbonated water. Some people also loves to put a slice of water melon in the Tinto de Verano to make it sweeter but the standard garnish is a slice of lemon.

Sangria who invented it?

Sangria also has its owns history and this one is a bit rare because with Agua the Valencia and Vargas we knew who was the genius behind the drinks but for Sangria there are two parties who claim that they invented Sangria. The Spaniards are drinking Sangria for centuries and it is seen as the Spanish drink. However, the British claim that they have made the world acquainted with this drink by introducing it in New York even before the 18th century.

Sangria has the base of red or white wine and is flavored with different kind of fruits. Mostly: orange, peach, lemon, pineapple or apple. But you can also add other fruits! Add the end they add honey, sugar and orange juice. You have all different kind of Sangria but the most popular Sangria is still the basic one.

Sangria in a bottle

You can separate Tinto de Verano vs Sangria by the fruits. A lot of different fruits are used to make Sangria, Tinto de Verano usually comes without fruit.

If you want to see mountains, deserts and the sea you must do a road trip through Andalusia. We did this trip and we want to share our experience with you! In this article you will see our whole trip of five days in the beginning of December.

Discover more of Spain on a road trip through Andalusia

To rent a car isn’t really expensive in December. The best amount of people to rent a car with is five or ten. Renting a car for a week in December for five persons will cost you around 50 euros. So, 10 euro per person! In the summer this will be way more expensive than in the winter. Don’t worry about the cold because we could even walk around in shorts in December! You will see the amazing weather on the sunny pictures of our road trip through Andalusia.

Day 1: After picking up our cars from the airport in Valencia (you can choose the location for yourself), we drove to Alicante (1,5 hour). We booked a house at 5 to 10 minutes from the city center. Our house had a beautiful view over the mountains and the landscape.

The view from our house

Day 2: After waking up we drove to Elche. Where we visited the Palm Groves (Palmeral) of Elche. The Palm Groves covers over 3.5km2 including 1.5km2 inside the city of Elche. This park is very rare because it counts around 97 different sorts palmtree families over 200.000 palms. This makes the Palm Groves one of the biggest palm gardens of the whole world! After seeing this we went to into the city center of Elche to visit buildings and eat a delicious ice cream. When we were finished we drove to our next house (3,5 hours) where we would sleep the rest of our trip in Almuñécar. We arrived around 9 pm, and gosh, what a house it was. A home cinema, a pool and even a jacuzzi! We found the house easily on Airbnb and it wasn’t that expensive because we were with 10 people. The road trip through Andalusia was for us already a succes with such a nice house.

Palm Groves

Day 3: We had to wake up early because we were going to Granada and the Alhambra (1,5 hour). There is a great history behind the Alhambra. The Alhambra is a palace which was built by the Nasrid (the last Moorish Muslim dynasty in Iberia) and Mohammed ben Al-Ahmar which was the first ruler of the emirate of Granada. The palace is a reflection of the Moorish culture, it has a big garden and beautiful inscriptions and vaultings. If you are close to Granada, you should definitely visit it! After the visit to Alhambra we went to the city of Granada. This city isn’t really lively in comparison with the other cities of Spain, but Granada has a beautiful historical look with many old buildings and squares to visit. After a long day of walking nothing is better than to chill in the jacuzzi with a glass of red wine.

Day 4: At day 4 we went to the beautiful Ronda (2 hours). Ronda lays in the province of Malaga an it’s a mountainous area. The city of Ronda has a great atmosphere, the streets are small, the squares are big and outside of Ronda you can see he Puente Nuevo bridge which spans the 120 meter and is with the largest bridge at carries the Guadalevín river. It’s kind of sad we didn’t go to Malaga, but you will overrate how long everything is driving. Especially after a long day of walking you just want to sit in the jacuzzi again.

Sunset in Ronda

Day 5: After 4 days of exploring the beauty of Andalusia it was already time to heading home, what would take 5 hours. However, you will not be bored during your return trip, because you drive through the mountains with beautiful fields. On the way back we drove past the Tarbenas desert and made a stop in Murcia.

The famous drink of Valencia: Agua de Valencia. This drink was introduced in 1959 by Constante Gil who worked in Valencia at the bar: Café Madrid. A group of Basque travellers challenged the bartender to make something new with cava. When the barman came up with this delicious treat, it eventually became a tradition to order Agua de Valencia for the Basque travellers. 11 years later in 1970 the drink became more and more known to others.

Make Agua de Valencia easy and quick

Most cocktails are quite hard to make because of the endless ingredients and the cutting work. With Agua de Valencia this is not the case! This cocktails only consist of 4 ingredients and no cutting work (maybe a slice of orange for decoration). Agua de Valencia consist of the follow ingredients:

Fresh orange juice

Cava

Gin

Vodka

To make the cocktail so delicious as possible, it is best to use fresh orange juice. It could also be nice to add sugar to the Agua de Valencia, but this is not necessarily important. If you are on a leash or not really a fan of sugar, you can leave it out!

Serving a Agua de Valencia

First of all, it is important that you have 500 ml of fresh orange juice. Do you still need to squeeze them? Do that first! If you bought it from the shop, you can put 500 ml in a measuring cup and pour it into a large can. Then as follows add 300 ml of cava. Then you need to add 100 ml gin plus 100 ml vodka. As you read, there are quite a few layers of alcohol in this drink but you don’t really taste that because of the orange juice. So watch out because this can be very treacherous!

Below is a schematic representation of a can Agua de Valencia:

The proportions of a can Agua de Valencia.

If you want to add a bit of sugar to the Agua de Valencia, do this first! Even before the fresh juice. If not, the cava could froth.

Are you planning to go to Valencia or are you going to Valencia soon? Then we recommend you to go to a terrace in Valencia to go and drink Agua de Valencia on the terrace. With the sun in your face and the typical Spanish drink you can enjoy your holiday to the fullest!

Celebrating New Year’s eve in Valencia could be rather different than celebrating it in your home country. It has its own traditions. Yet, you can’t start your year better than celebrating New Year’s Eve in Valencia. In this article we will explain the habits of the habitants and the best parties to go to after 24:00

Making the best memories on New Year’s Eve in Valencia!

In the evening (before 24:00) you could give a big house party but what most people do is just having dinner in a luxe restaurant. With New Year’s in Valencia you don’t have to worry about your money because you can already get a whole menu for 30 euros! You can share a nice meal with your friends and family and talk about the good and bad moments of 2018. But don’t forget the time while chatting because at twelve it is happening!

With ‘at twelve it is happening’ we don’t mean straight away it is 2019 and look at the fireworks! No, don’t forget to eat the grapes! This isn’t a joke, it’s a tradition. It all began when the village of Viñalopó in the province of Alicante had an exceptionally good grape harvest and decided to distribute the grapes at New Year’s Eve what would give luck for the new year. Since 1909 people are standing on the big square in Valencia and eat a grape at 12 o’clock on each chime, so 12 in total!

Spain: the country of sun, sea and beach. The country where you can sit on a terrace and enjoy delicious tapas and sangria. When you think of Spain, you don’t immediately think of deserts. Yet you can discover deserts in Spain. Officially they are half deserts (climate between subtropical and desert climate). This climate has a little more vegetation than a desert climate. Due to the drought there are no trees, just grasses and some shrubs.

Discover deserts in Spain

There are two well-known deserts in Spain that are worth visiting, there are also landscapes to be found in Spain that certainly resemble a desert. In this article we will talk about the next deserts:

Bardenas Reales in Navarra

Tabernas woestijn in Andalusië

Imanfaya Nationaal Park – (Lanzarote)

Bardenas Reales in Navarra

In the southeast of Navarre lies the Bardenas Reales, the largest desert in Europe. This natural park has been declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. A semi-desert landscape of about 42,000 hectares is very impressive. This steppe has to do with drought and consists mainly of rocks and stone. If you go to the Bardenas Reales in Navarre you really think you are in a different world!

Bardenas Reales in Navarra

Tabernas desert in Andalusia

The Tabernas is a semi-desert located in the southeastern part of Almería.
Despite the extreme drought in this area, there are many succulents. Certain plant species even grow only in the Tabernas desert. When you enter the Tabernas desert in Andalusia, it looks like you are in the Wild West. During the year it is around 17 degrees and this desert is also considered to be the only real desert in Europe.

Tabernas desert in Andalusië

Imanfaya Nationaal Park – (Lanzarote)

In this area you can also discover large areas of droughts. It is a volcanic landscape where you will find the most beautiful colors: red, brown, black and ochre. This landscape consists of around 24 volcanoes and is definitely worth a visit. This landscape is not seen as a desert but you certainly will not see trees or shrubs.

Imanfaya Nationaal Park

Desert in Spain that look like a filmset

Talking about the Wild West… Did you know that the Spanish deserts are mostly used as a film set? Very famous films, such as “The good, the bad and the ugly” and “Indiana Jones” (the last crusade) are recorded here. A real game of thrones fan will recognize the pictures of the Tabernas desert because in this desert a whole season is filmed of the popular serie. You might have expected that these big movies were only shot in America, in the real dessert. But no, this can also be done in beautiful Spain!

What doesn’t Spain have to offer! 😉
