The name Gaudi will probably not be unknown to you. His full name is Antoni Gaudí i Cornet and this man was a Catalan architect. Around 1900 he designed particularly impressive buildings and objects. You will find most of these beautiful works in Barcelona, such as The Sagrada Família, one of the most famous works.

Works of Gaudi

The works of Gaudi consist of 7 buildings that are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. 6 of these structures can be found in Barcelona and one in Santa Coloma de Cervelló. Since 1984 the works of Gaudi have already been on the World Heritage List. UNESCO honors Gaudi for its creative contribution to the development of the architecture of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The monuments have a personal style and symbolize Catalan modernism, a cultural and artistic movement. The next 7 (plus a bonus) works by Gaudi are definitely worth a visit.

Sagrada Familia

To start with the best known, the Sagrada Familia (Holy Family) is a great basilica and is seen as the absolute masterpiece of Gaudi and also the most important characteristic of Barcelona. The church has a length of 90 meters and an unfinished tower of 172.5 meters. The construction of the Sagrada Familia started in 1882 and according to the latest plans the church should be finished in 2026.

The Sagrada Familia is the most visited monument in Spain with about three million visitors a year! Tickets can be ordered in advance on the website, this way you avoid having to wait in line for a long time.

The Sagrada Familia

Casa Battlo

The Casa Battlo was built between 1904 and 1906 and again has an architecture based on inspiration from nature. The wavy shape of the facade are inspired by the waves of the Mediterranean Sea or on the winding forms of the mountains of Monsterrat. The roof has the shape of a dragon and is partly covered with ceramics, these are the scales of the dragon. The dragon symbolizes the dragon of Saint George. The cross on the roof is the lance of St. George, the wrought-iron balconies are skulls and the gallery on the first floor is the mouth of the dragon. The legendary dragon slayer St. Joris or Sant Jordi is the patron saint of the Spanish region of Catalonia.

Palacio Güell

The Palacio Güell or Palau Güell is a large mansion with a fairytale garden on the roof.

Park Güell

Park Güell or Parque Güell is a large city park in the Gracia district on the southern slope of Monte Carmelo in north-eastern Barcelona. You’ve probably seen this pictures of this place before. The architecture of the Park Güell is inspired by nature. Since 1926 it’s a public park. The Park Güell has an area of 17.18 hectares and has undulating shapes similar to rivers. It’s also covered in mosaic. The Dragonstairs is built around a fountain in the shape of a salamander. A terrace with a bank of over 100 meters in the shape of a snake is the central point of the park. The main road in the park is called the Rosary and there are many viaducts. The museum in the park has actually been Gaudi’s residence for a short time.

Parque Güell

The Crypt of the Colonia Güell

The Crypt of the Colonia Güell is located in the Colonia Güell district in the village of Santa Coloma de Cervello. It’s the crypt of a church that has never been built. The crypt has a separate construction and colored stained-glass windows that symbolize the transformation of a butterfly as a resurrection from the dead.

Casa Vicens

Vasa Vicens is seen as the first major work of Gaudi (built between 1883 and 1885). The large and elegant house has an impressive façade. It was sold in 2014 and will be opened to the public after renovation.

Casa Mila (La Pedrera)

The Casa Mila is an apartment complex with undulating outside walls. Because of the irregular façade, the building is nicknamed La Pedrera (the quarry). The building has an area of 1323 square meters. On the roof there are 28 turned chimneys that give natural ventilation. On the sixth floor there is an apartment with furniture from the 1920s and in the attic there is a permanent exhibition.

Catedral La Seu (Palma de Mallorca)

One that is often not mentioned in the works of Gaudi is the Cathedral at Mallorca in Palma. It’s not a complete design by Gaudi, but he certainly has contributed and this is why we find it worth mentioning. In the beginning of the 20th century Antoni Gaudí led the renovation of the altar room of La Seu. Among other things, he left a gigantic chandelier hanging over the altar, and the ceramic walls were also introduced by him. Gaudi installed the canopy as well. The canopy is made of wrought iron and is illuminated by many lights.

As you have seen above, the works of Gaudi are quite impressive and certainly worth a visit. Since almost all of these works are located in Barcelona, a city trip to this wonderful city should definitely be a good idea, right? Do you want to discover Barcelona low-budget? These are really famous and often have long waiting lines. In total, this pass is cheaper than buying tickets separately.

Metro

Buy instead of separate tickets, a T10 card. This will cost you 9,95 euros for 10 rides, instead of 2,15 per ride.

One of the best things of the city of Barcelona is that, besides having a lot to offer to discover the city, it also has an extensive beach! Only a few meters from the center you’ll find Barcelona Beach with its soft sand, the perfect place to relax after some sightseeing in the city. It is a beach of 4 kilometers in length, and – maybe this is new for you – it is one of the best beaches of Europe! It exists of several parts and today we’ll show you the best ones.

Discover Barcelona Beach

It is the perfect place to relax: have a drink in one of its chiringuitos (beach bars), take a dive in the fresh waters and relax on the soft sand all day. On Barcelona Beach you can rent sunbeds and umbrellas for more or less 6€ each. Do you prefer quieter places to relax, the beach also has parts where it’s less crowded. Let’s show you all the ins and outs of Barcelona Beach.

La Barceloneta

This is the most important and best known part of Barcelona Beach. It is located near the center of the city and you can easily access it from the fishing district of the same name: La Barceloneta. Many tourists visit this part of the beach because it’s full of things to do, it has ping pong tables, seafood restaurants, beach bars, and they made the beach accessible to wheelchair users.

Bogatell

This beach is located in the district of Sant Marti, in the east part of Barcelona. They say it is one of the safest beaches of Barcelona and has a length of 600 meters. There are many facilities like volleyball nets, lifeguard, showers, restaurants, bars, parking… Besides that, the Olympic Port (Port Olímpic) it closely located to this beach. The port is named like this because it is situated near the Olympic Village of the district of Poblenou. In 1992, many athletes stayed here during the Olympic Games.

Sant Sebastià

Sant Sebastià Beach is located next to La Barceloneta Beach and starts at Passeig Joan de Borbó. Here starts the promenade and it is one of the favorite beaches of the locals. It once was a nude beach, but not anymore. It is easy accessible by public transport and, the beach has an area especially for disabled people, there are special showers and changing rooms, among others.

Mar Bella

Mar Bella Beach is also located in the district of Sant Marti. It is one of the newest beaches since it was made during the preparations of the Olympic Games in 1992. It has a nude part, but it also visited by many young people who live in this district. It also has some nice beach bars and at the end of the beach you’ll find sailing school that organizes water activities.

Nova Mar Bella

This is one of the quiet beaches of Barcelona and therefore visited by many locals and people from outside the city. However, it does have some chiringuitos and a volleyball court. So, do you prefer some relaxation? Or you don’t want to be surrounded by tourists, then go visit this beach.

Llevant

Llevant beach is made in 2006 and therefore the newest part of Barcelona Beach. It is very popular and located next Mar Bella Beach. They paid special attention to those whose mobility is limited: the parking areas are very closely located to the beach, adapted toilets, visable signage and wooden walkways.

When you are in Barcelona, don’t forget to discover all the different areas to enjoy Barcelona Beach at its fullest: taste the best seafood dishes in one of the restaurants, enjoy a cocktail in one of the fun chiringuitos and above all, relax!

Fancy restaurants, parties where you can spot celebrities and famous places where you pay 12 euros for a good wine. Sounds really nice, doesn’t it? Well, as a student probably not. While living the student-life, you might have a budget. Then would it be better to get nice things for a valuable price. To make searching for a nice and worth-it place in Barcelona easier, we’ve made a must-see hotspots Barcelona list for you.

Must-see hotspots Barcelona

We couldn’t visit all must-see hotspots Barcelona, but we’ve found some really nice places to share with you! Warning, as a student you have to know that Barcelona is not the cheapest city in Spain. There are a lot of expensive clubs and restaurants, but we found some nice and affordable ones. These places were also recommended by several students who currently live in Barcelona.

TOTO | Restaurant & Winebar

Toto is a Italian restaurant which you can find the heart of Barcelona. They serve culinary and traditional Italian dishes, but also some Spanish. What is notifying, is the atmosphere of the restaurant. It looks really pretty inside, and you can describe the style of the restaurant as romantic and cosy. This place is, besides by students, also well-known by bloggers. This pretty and attractive place is a perfect opportunity to take nice pictures. The prices at the menu are not very cheap, but they offer a menu for 15 euros daily. This menu contains 3 courses, free water and a wine! The service is excellent, they are really polite and speak English. Definitely a place to visit when you are in Barcelona!

Surfhouse | Restaurant & Cocktailbar

If the weather has got a positive vibe: visit Surfhouse! You can find this lovely place at the beach of Barcelona. They serve Mexican and Thai food, and everything is really fresh and qualitative high! You can also order the most delicious and freshly made juices, smoothies and cocktails. The place looks like a happy place and will give you a tropical vibe. There are cosy wooden lounge sets, but you can also choose to sit at a table made of a surfboard. The service is quite good and they are relaxed and make your food and drinks with passion. The prices are student-friendly, because for around 9 euros you can have lunch. Breakfast is around 7 euros.

Brunch -in the city | Event

Well-known among students is Brunch in the city, also as known as: brunch in the park. This is a nice party that pops up in Barcelona, and where well known artist will perform. Besides nice drinks, having something to eat is no problem at all. Brunch in the city will provide several foodtrucks. This year on the 8th of April and the 13th of May, you can find Brunch in the city at the Petit Amphitheatre del Mar (Parc del Fórum). Two dance-floors will be right next to the sea, there will be 10 foodtrucks, there will be more activities and a big market space.

Barcelona as bicycle city might not be the first thing which comes to your mind. And you’re right, before it wasn’t, but a lot changed. Nowadays the bicycle is the best, easiest and nicest way to go around the city.

Popular way of transport

Of course the weather helps. The soft Mediterranean climate of the city, who wouldn’t enjoy that by riding the bicycle? With a lot of bike lanes, wide boulevards, and a few difference in height around the city center and the beach Barcelona is the ideal city to cycle. Not only for tourists or visitors but also for the Barcelonese citizens it is considered a very popular way of transport. Cycling is for everybody in Barcelona!

Over 200 kilometers of bike lanes

Since 2007 the cycle-infrastructure started to change. In 2011 Barcelona was rated number 3 in the Copenhagenize chart of bicycle friendliness. At the moment there is more than 200 kilometers of bike lane and that’s becoming more and more, since the city makes new bike lanes every year.

Bring your bike in the subway and train

Good to know, off-peak, in the weekends and august, you are allowed to take your bike for free in the subway. In the regional FCG trains you can always bring your bike.
Are you coming to Barcelona to study Spanish, the perfect means of transport in the city is a bicycle.

Antoni Gaudí i Cornet, this name might sound familiar, but what makes this man so popular? Who has visit Barcelona has definitely seen some work of one of the most famous architects in the world.

What makes this man so popular?

Antoni Gaudí was born on the 25th of June 1852 in Reus, close to Barcelona. He joined the School of Architecture and combined this together with working as an assistant in several places like an architectural practice and the workshop of a carpenter and a glassmaker.

After he graduated he received his first commission. His reputation grew and he got projects commissioned by the bourgeoisie like Casa Batlló, Casa Milà and Casa Calvet. All these structures you will find in Barcelona.

Park Güell, Palau Güell, Casa Vicens and Teresian college are also designed by Gaudí.

In 1883 he also took over the design of the impressive Sagrada Familia. For a long period, he combined this with other projects, but in 1914 he decided to focus only on the Basilica. The final months he even lived close by his studio.

On the 10th of June 1926, he died of his injuries due to a tragic tram accident three days earlier. He was buried in the crypt of the Sagrada Familia.

The first tower was finished in 1925. This was the only tower he saw completed. These days the Basilica is ready for 70 percent. In 2020 the six main towers will be finished and the goal is to complete the Basilica in 2026. Watch this movie to see what it will look like.

Are you going to Barcelona soon and do you want to visit the Sagrada Familia, book your tickets in advance on this website.

Wherever you are in Spain make sure you experience el clásico, a famous football match between to football giants in Spain.

Experience el clásico, the most important football match in Spain

Just before the preparations for Christmas were about to start last year, a special event took place in Spain: El Clásico. In other words, the clash between eternal rivals FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. On Saturday December 3 the Camp Nou stadium was the theatre for this special match, which always ensures spectacle and nice goals. If you’re lucky and you are in Spain during the match, you can experience el clásico, and see how the Spaniards experience this match in their own way.

Although it was financially almost impossible to actual go to Barcelona and buy tickets, it was in Valencia a nice experience as well. The week before the match the shops will sell a lot of merchandise. It is difficult to estimate which of the two teams has the most support in this city.

When you don’t know where to watch El Clásico on match day itself, ask around. Many people from Valencia tell you that every random bar with a television screen would broadcast Barca-Real. And no Irish Pub of course, but rather a typical Spanish bar where the delicious jamones hang above you on the ceiling and the dobles stand next to you on the counter. A little bet with your friends and the game can begin!

It is better not make it that late the evening before. To get a good place to sit and watch the game in a bar you have to be on time. But do not expect that you can follow the football every single second. Bars will be filled with people and besides that Spaniards are known to be quite passionate during these kind of games.

Because FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are very big, in Valencia as well live a lot of supporters of both clubs. That’s why it is so special to witness that (youthful) fans can watch the match together. You can’t imagine that when for example Manchester United and Liverpool face each other. Nevertheless, one can see that more people cheer for the Catalans than the Madrilènes. This manifests itself in jubilation after the 1-0 scored by Suarez just after halftime. Moreover, it is advisable to go on the streets during halftime. You will notice that it is very quiet there and that’s how much the confrontation lives in the city! Eventually the rivalry is not too bad when Ramos scores the 1-1 just before the end of the game. The people drink a beer together and cheers on the result.

Altogether it’s special to perceive how El Clásico is experienced in this country that is crazy for the football game.
