Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas

The largest protected natural area of Spain on 2099 km2, the Sierras de Cazorla in northeastern Andalusia, north of Jaén. One of the most popular walks you can make here along the Borosa River that runs through a landscape that extends to a beautiful mountain lake through a gorge and two tunnels. Sierra Nevada

This impressive ‘wall’ of high peaks of the Sierra Nevada offers a beautiful, snow-covered backdrop of the legendary Alhambra palace in Granada. The highest of the 75 km long range is Mulhacén (the highest mountain in Spain at 3479m) with a summit that is not very difficult to reach thanks to the minibus services of the national park, which run from June to October. The minibus from the village of Capileira transports walkers to an altitude of 2700 meters. This is about three hours of walking from the top. The Parque Nacional Sierra Nevada which occupies the upper altitudes is home to more than 2000 ibexes. The Sierra Nevada Natural Park covers the lower altitudes. There are countless beautiful hiking trails here.

Doñana

With a beautiful expanse of water, dunes, forests and the beach in the delta of the Rio Guadalquivir, this is one of the largest wetlands in Europe. It’s a refuge for half a million migratory birds including flamingos, storks, spoonbills and bee-eaters. In addition, there are also very endangered animals such as the Iberian lynx and the Spanish imperial eagle. Doñana is actually divided into two parks: a national park of 542 square kilometers with the buffer of a surrounding natural park of 538 square kilometers. The village of El Rocío, with a beautiful view over the wetlands and their wildlife, is the main visitor base. The best and only way to visit the parks is with an all-terrain vehicle with operators such as Cooperativa Marismas del Rocío, Doñana Reservas and Doñana Nature. The chance of spotting the Iberian lynx and the Spanish imperial eagle are very low but it’s definitely possible to spot some of the other animals.

Sierra de Grazalema

High green peaks rise from the plains of the province of Cádiz and form the small but incredibly beautiful and surprisingly rugged Sierra de Grazalema nature park. Drive over the exciting Puerto de las Palomas and pass between the beautiful white villages of Grazalema and Zahara de la Sierra. In summer you can cool off in various local village coils and you can go to Horizon for canyoning, paragliding, kayaking, ferrata-climbs or the Garganta Verde gorge walk.

Cabo de Gata-Nijar

When it’s very hot in the summer, it makes sense to go to the coast. The Parque Natural Cabo de Gata-Nijar stretches over a 70 km long coastline, where high volcanic headlands emerge between some of the most beautiful, but least crowded sandy beaches of Andalusia. You can enjoy cooling off and sunbathing on the beaches, but you can also make boat trips, kayaking and Suppen (stand-up paddle). You can also go snorkeling in the most pristine waters of the Mediterranean. In autumn you can make beautiful walks along the coastal paths.

Benidorm is the most popular tourist attraction in Spain after Madrid and Barcelona. In Belgium and the Netherlands, Benidorm is mainly known as a place to spend the winter for the elderly. Discover more of Spain on a road trip through Andalusia

To rent a car isn’t really expensive in December. The best amount of people to rent a car with is five or ten. Renting a car for a week in December for five persons will cost you around 50 euros. So, 10 euro per person! In the summer this will be way more expensive than in the winter.  Don’t worry about the cold because we could even walk around in shorts in December! You will see the amazing weather on the sunny pictures of our road trip through Andalusia.

Day 1: After picking up our cars from the airport in Valencia (you can choose the location for yourself), we drove to Alicante (1,5 hour). We booked a house at 5 to 10 minutes from the city center. Our house had a beautiful view over the mountains and the landscape.

Day 2: After waking up we drove to Elche. Where we visited the Palm Groves (Palmeral) of Elche. The Palm Groves covers over 3.5km2 including 1.5km2 inside the city of Elche. This park is very rare because it counts around 97 different sorts palmtree families over 200.000 palms. This makes the Palm Groves one of the biggest palm gardens of the whole world! After seeing this we went to into the city center of Elche to visit buildings and eat a delicious ice cream. When we were finished we drove to our next house (3,5 hours) where we would sleep the rest of our trip in Almuñécar. We arrived around 9 pm, and gosh, what a house it was. A home cinema, a pool and even a jacuzzi! We found the house easily on Airbnb and it wasn’t that expensive because we were with 10 people. The road trip through Andalusia was for us already a succes with such a nice house.

Day 3: We had to wake up early because we were going to Granada and the Alhambra (1,5 hour). There is a great history behind the Alhambra. The Alhambra is a palace which was built by the Nasrid (the last Moorish Muslim dynasty in Iberia) and Mohammed ben Al-Ahmar which was the first ruler of the emirate of Granada. The palace is a reflection of the Moorish culture, it has a big garden and beautiful inscriptions and vaultings. If you are close to Granada, you should definitely visit it! After the visit to Alhambra we went to the city of Granada. This city isn’t really lively in comparison with the other cities of Spain, but Granada has a beautiful historical look with many old buildings and squares to visit. After a long day of walking nothing is better than to chill in the jacuzzi with a glass of red wine.

Day 4: At day 4 we went to the beautiful Ronda (2 hours). Ronda lays in the province of Malaga an it’s a mountainous area. The city of Ronda has a great atmosphere, the streets are small, the squares are big and outside of Ronda you can see he Puente Nuevo bridge which spans the 120 meter and is with the largest bridge at carries the Guadalevín river. It’s kind of sad we didn’t go to Malaga, but you will overrate how long everything is driving. Especially after a long day of walking you just want to sit in the jacuzzi again.

Day 5: After 4 days of exploring the beauty of Andalusia it was already time to heading home, what would take 5 hours. However, you will not be bored during your return trip, because you drive through the mountains with beautiful fields. On the way back we drove past the Tarbenas desert and made a stop in Murcia.

Bilbao beaches; recreation, peace and relaxation

Bilbao is a city that is becoming increasingly popular and that’s well deserved. It’s a very beautiful city. Bilbao is not so massive and has a feeling of a big cozy, charming village. In addition to having a very nice center in Bilbao, this city also has wonderful beaches. The Bilbao beaches are also suitable for several purposes. You can practice different water sports, play volleyball, tan and enjoy the peace and relaxation. We can definitely recommend the following Bilbao beaches:

Playa de Ereaga

In the exclusive Getxo, Playa de Ereaga is located at metro stop Neguri, about 20 minutes from the center of Bilbao. This beach is located on a pleasant boulevard with a few cafes and restaurants. On this beach you can actively participate in various activities both on the water and on the beach. Depending on the weather you can go, (kite) surfing, sailing, hire a canoe and play a game of volleyball. You can also choose to take a nice walk along the boulevard and admire the impressive villas from the last century. After the marina you will reach the river mouth and the world famous gliding bridge Puente Colgante, which itself is already worth a visit to Getxo. If you walk the other way from the beach you will end up in the picturesque Puerto Viejo, this is the old port of Algorta. At this place you can eat delicious food while you’re in the middle of the old white fisherman’s houses.

Playa de Arrigunaga

From Puerto Viejo you can follow a nice walking path along the sea and the cliffs to this beach. You can also just take the metro, then get off at Bidezabal and you have to walk for 10 minutes. This is a slightly smaller beach than Playa de Ereaga and this is also the beach where most locals go. You have a fantastic view over the cliffs and the old mill. At the beach is a skate park and a playground with a large lawn and plenty of terraces to once again have some nice food and drinks. Above the cliffs is a beautifully landscaped walking and cycling path that passes an old fort and runs all the way to the town of Sopelana, one of the most famous surf spots in Spain, where you can also learn to surf as a beginner.

Playa de Gorliz

Playa de Gorliz lends itself as the perfect beach where you can make wonderful beach walks. You can also go cycling, windsurfing and horse riding. The beach consists mainly of fine sand and there are several bars and terraces where you can sit in the sun while enjoying a snack and a drink. On the website of Metro Bilbao you will find more information about the beaches of Bilbao and the metro which of course comes in handy when you travel by metro to the beach.

Playa de Plentzia

Are you someone who goes to the beach for the beautiful sun-kissed skin? Then choose Playa de Plentzia. There is a beautiful large sandy beach here which is also very crowded during the summer months. Again you have several bars and terraces here for the delicious appetite and a refreshing drink. There are also picnic tables, showers and toilets on this beach. That is why it is also a nice idea to bring all your own tasty snacks and to enjoy them on one of the picnic tables. Picnicking on the beach, sounds great right?!

Playa Salvaje

Are you a real sports fanatic? Then visit Playa Salvaje. At this place you will find the best waves to surf. Aren’t you afraid of heights and adventurous activities? Then you are at the right place here because you can also go paragliding here! In addition, you have a lot of rocks at Playa Salvaje and you can fish and camp here. For adventurers and real outdoor people this is a golden place.

The cathedral was built over a period of 116 years and as a result a there’s a mix of the architectural styles baroque, rococo and neoclassical. Torre Tavira

City park ‘Parque Genovés’ is the perfect place to go for a walk or cool down when it’s too hot. The park consists of many tall palms, beautifully pruned trees, fine springs and a special botanical garden. In the park there’s a café with a lovely large terrace, a playground and an open air theater where there are often concerts.

Plaza Topete

Because of the many flower stalls this square is also called Plaza de las Flores. Start your day here with café con leche and a newspaper, while the square and the adjacent central market come to life. Plaza Topete is also the place to get acquainted with the specialty of Cádiz: fresh fish from the Bay of Cádiz fried in olive oil.

Besides these nice places that you could visit during your stay in Cádiz. Cádiz is also a real party town with festivities throughout the year. The highlight of the year and the pride of the city is the Carnaval de Cádiz, one of the most famous and largest carnival celebrations in the world. For a week and a half there will be non-stop singing and dancing. The most important part of all festivities are the satirical singing groups that scoff at politicians and public figures. Things to do in Bilbao; the places you must visit

In the 1990’s Bilbao went through an economic crisis. After that the city decided it was time for some innovation and to become a more modern city. The highlights of this urban renewal were the arrival of the metro in 2012 (Euskotran), the Guggenheim museum (Museo Guggenheim Bilbao) and the Palacio Euskalduna (a concert and event hall). Currently they are still working outside the center to continue this urban renewal there as well. They set up pedestrian paths, underground parking lots, parks and new sports halls. In Bilbao you have plenty of choice when it comes to transport options. You even have special buses and boats specifically designed to show you the beautiful spots of the city. You drive or sail past the tourist attractions. The nice thing about this is that you don’t have to do anything yourself, you can just sit and relax. Bus

Indispensable in a big city is a large bus network. Traveling by bus is very convenient and with such a large bus network as the one in Bilbao, there is always a bus stop near your destination. Buses in Spain are quite cheap, you pay €1.25 per ride. It doesn’t matter whether you are in the bus for half an hour or 5 minutes. The price is always the same no matter what the distance is.

Metro

The metro is just like the bus, quite cheap in Spain. A single ticket with the metro costs around €1. Prices vary between €0.90 and €1.20 per zone. Bilbao consists of five zones, A, B.0, B.1, B.2 and C. If you travel between the same zone, the price will be €0.90. If you travel between A and C the price will be €1.20 because this distance is longer. In Bilbao they use the Barik, this is a public transport card that you can use for the bus and metro. These cards can be obtained from vending machines at various sales points where you pay €3. Bike

It’s also possible to cycle in Bilbao. And if you want to be active during your trip, then traveling by bicycle is a great option. There are many companies where you can hire a bicycle for a couple of hours. You cycle together with a guide and they will guide you to the best sights in the city.

Taxi

Of course you also have the possibility to be transported by taxi. The ideal thing about a taxi is that you are dropped off exactly where you need to be. The taxi is a more expensive means of transport than the bus or metro, but in Spain, compared to other European cities, a taxi is relatively cheap. The starting price in Bilbao is €4 and per kilometer you pay between €0.75 and €1.50, this varies per taxi company and time. You can get a taxi at many different places.

Bilboats

Do you want to relax and not worry about anything else? Then you should definitely make a trip with a bilboat. With a bilboat you sail over the river and you can admire the sights from the water. You can choose a trip of 1 or 2 hours.

Train

If you want to see more of Spain than only Bilbao,  then the train is the perfect option to travel to different cities. There are many trains to different places. For example: a trip to San Sebastian would be a good choice!

Hop on- Hop-off bus

A well-known phenomenon is the tourist bus that you see in many big cities. Often red in color, you’ve probably seen them. What is really fantastic about this bus is what is also in the name: you can get on and off at different places. So do you see something that you really want to see up close? Palma de Mallorca; sun, sea, beach and city

Mallorca has everything you’ll need for a wonderful holiday, a city trip or even for studying in Mallorca. Mallorca is a combination of beautiful beaches, small villages, the most beautiful views over the sea and Palma as the big city. Mallorca is an island where you can do anything you want. Mallorca is also suitable for the largest target groups: seniors, young people, families and couples.

Palma de Mallorca

Palma is a very vibrant and modern city. The old parts of the city are well combined with the modern parts. Many alleys and small streets, with cozy terraces, cafes and restaurants. You can also shop well here, in the big famous shops like Zara and H&M but also in many small boutiques.

There are a number of sights in the city. The most famous of these is the cathedral La Seu, which was built by, among others, the famous Antoni Gaudi, who is also responsible for many impressive buildings in Barcelona. Parc de la Mar, a nice quiet place in the city where you can recover from the shopping and the crowds you experience in the center of Palma. On one of the walls of the park, the Catalan artist Joan Mira has made a great work of art that you will not overlook.

Playa Palma de Mallorca

Besides that Palma is a very vibrant city that you shouldn’t miss out on, you also have to visit one of the most important beaches on the island. Playa Palma de Mallorca is located near Palma and is an eight kilometer long sandy beach. It is a very flat sand beach which makes it very suitable for enjoying the sun. You can imagine that in the summer months, it’s quite crowded on this beach.
